         <description><![CDATA[<div>I learned much more about the different areas of the brain and how each affects a person’s life and recovery if damaged.&nbsp; I also learned from family members that their loved one is now a different person than who they were before and they must learn to “take what you’ve got, work with it, and make the best of it.”&nbsp; Their personality changes can affect their emotions and even their food preferences.&nbsp; Depression is a common side effect, as well as socialization changes which will have a lot of restrictions due to the fact that TBI survivors often can’t handle things like too much activity going on, sounds, lights, and heat.&nbsp; Family and friends need to have a lot of patient and understanding because recovery is going to take some time and everyone heals differently and at their own pace. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Knowing about the different parts of the brain, what they are responsible for, and how they affect individuals, is an important first step to understanding how to help TBI survivors rehabilitate from their injuries in the best possible way. &nbsp; This extends into the classroom for teachers.&nbsp; It is important for teachers to understand their student’s injuries and how best to accommodate their needs.&nbsp; Also, it is important to get proper treatment right away because an individual’s brain goes through a process of natural healing which is called <em>Spontaneous Recovery</em> during the first 6-18 months. &nbsp; Therefore, proper treatment during the first year can make a lot of difference in their recovery.&nbsp; Teachers need to be aware of this as well because most TBI survivors are going to need physical therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), and Speech Therapy every day, as well as cognitive therapy.&nbsp; In addition, it is important to find support groups for themselves and their family members.&nbsp; Teachers are in a position to suggest resources such as Brainstorming4us.coma as a wonderful resource for families affected by Traumatic Brain Injury. </div>]]></description>
