My Reading Experiences

As a child I was very eager to learn new things. This is why learning to read was really exciting to me. I remember learning phonics throughout school, and my sisters would also help me at home. In school, I remember going in reading groups and we would have to read different level books and then take quizzes on them on the computer. I usually enjoyed this because I liked reading. I also remember when I was in 3rd grade I became a reading helper and I was assigned a 1st grade student who was a struggling reader. I would go to his class once a week and I would spend time helping him read. I enjoyed this because it made me feel confident in my reading skills and I enjoyed feeling like I was teaching him.

I don't think my culture or heritage has a huge influence on my reading experience. My family is Italian and German. However, I can't really find a correlation between my culture and my reading. Although, I will say my family background has shaped my reading experiences. Growing up, I remember my mom always reading books, doing crossword puzzles, word searches, etc. Also, my sisters both did really well in reading. I believe this may have influenced me throughout my life. At this point in my life, I don't read for recreation too often, mainly because I just can't find the time. However, it seems to still be my strong suit even in school now. Throughout all the SATs I have taken, and all the Praxis exams, I seem to always score the highest on reading and writing compared to the other subjects. Overall, my reading experiences as a child have positively influenced my life and have continued ton successfully develop throughout the years.
