October 7 SAT  to register see your counselor. SAT is on of the test need to meet your graduation requirement. A score of 450 is needed in English and a 450 in math. This month we will be preparing for SATs. Vocabulary is a very important component to the SAT. Be sure to check Google classroom for vocabulary practice and review.
This month we are also working on our second essay in preparation for the Accuplacer. A score of 6 is needed in order to pass the Accuplacer test. Be sure to see Google classroom for further information.

Literacy Lab:  We have completed the Novel Salt to the Sea and Skyped with the author in order to have our questions answered. It was a great experience to be able to interact with the author. 
As a final activity we wrote a class essay on Salt to the Sea. This is the military entrance exam, but also serves as a graduation requirement. Just like the SAT vocabulary is a very important component to the test. This month we will be preparing for the ASVAB. A score of 31 is needed for this test.

Lit Lab:  This month we will start the Hazelwood High School series - Tears of a Tiger. This novel follows a high school student Andy through a trying ordeal. Will he receive the support he needs from his teachers and classmates? ELA Portfolio: We are writing our final essay before we sit for our Accuplacer exam on January 16.

We have started researching plants this month. As a class we have read and evaluated  many articles and websites about plants. After reading we took our new knowledge about plants and began voting and compiling what types of plants can germinate in March/April. Then we took a class vote on the type of seeds we would like to plant. The winners are Marigold and Forget- Me-Not. We worked with the science department and used their green house to start our plants.

ELA Portfolio: The state Portfolio's are due at the end of this month. Student's have been working hard to complete the tasks.

Literacy Lab: We have finished the second book in the Hazelwood High series - Forged by Fire.  Some great classroom discussions were created. 
Next Unit - Fairy Tales - Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Snow White.  In this unit we will compare the original Grimm fairy tale to the modern retelling and discuss how society influences the meaning of a story.

ELA Portfolio: All testing is completed. This month students will be working on creating a literary magazine. The students have voted and decided to call the magazine Tales From the Brook. A call for submission has been sent to the art department and the English department with a  due date of May 11. The magazine should be completed and sent to print by May 21.

Literacy Lab: Students have been studying Grimm's Fairy Tales and learning how and why stories change over time. This month they are writing an essay to inform how Grimm's Fairy Tales have changed over time.
