The most engaging lesson prepares the students for learning by activating prior knowledge, it is taught from different perspectives and motivates the students to use their senses to learn (how it looks, how it feels. etc.) Yes, engaging lessons are meaningful!

My most engaging lessons have students that want to participate, not because they have to for a grade. They find something worth doing regardless of the grade benefit, and they seem to have fun doing it. It’s like they forget we are in school, but they are still learning something important.

One of my most engaging lessons was when my students performed a play after reading a graphic novel tied to the unit’s theme. We used elements of drama, visual storytelling, and hands-on activities to explore conflict and character development. This lesson was meaningful because it connected directly to their interests and allowed them to express their understanding through performance, not just written work. For many of my students with IEPs, this approach removed barriers and gave them a voice. It also created opportunities for collaboration and built confidence as they saw themselves succeed in front of their peers. By grounding the lesson in their strengths and real experiences, the learning became more memorable and impactful.
