I hate to say it, but my brother is a definite iPad kid. He loves phone or tablet time, and one of his favorite things to play is abc mouse. Contrary to what you would think, this is actually a learning game. He completes small activities and gets in game rewards when he does well. This leaves him felling proud and excited to have won.

2 MILES TO THE BUS STOP

My Mom was raised in 29 Palms, California. Much of her Junior High and Highschool career her family did not have a working car. This meant she would have to walk or get a ride to the nearest bus stop to make it to school. Due to her living way in the middle of nowhere, she had to walk over two miles to the nearest pickup. To top it all off this took place in one of the hottest deserts in America and would regularly reach 120*F. Its safe to say Im glad I got dropped off at school when we lived there.

When my mom was in high school they introduced the computer lab elective. This gave students the ability to use a set of computers that were very different from the ones we use today. These huge boxes took up lots of space and were very slow. Her school was very poor and could not afford more than a couple dozen computers, which is very different compared to today where we have personal technology.

19 years later I ended up going to the same elementary school as my mom. By this point we had weekly computer lab classes. These classes took place in a room that had 20-30 computers, of those who knew how many working, and were mostly focused on typing practice. This was a fairly poor school in a remote military town. After moving to Mesa, Arizona in 5th grade I had access to the computer lab as well as classroom tablets. There were limited sets shared across the school but this was still a significant improvement.

When I was 6years old I got a flip phone; that was my primary form of communication all the way until I got my first iPhone 6 back in 9th grade. I was elated to finally fit in with everyone, however, I soon found phones were widely scorned in schools. It had never really applied to me before but I now hat to be conscious of my phone use in class. By the time I graduated phones had been widely acknowledged in school curriculum as a tool. Many teachers allowed use of phones on some assignments.

My brother is currently in his first year of junior high. This is his first year attending in person school in 3 years and already his experience has varied to mine greatly. Every student has a personal Chromebook which is where they perform most of their work. Further than that he has the option to take classes that teach coding, digital literacy, and even typing. Tech has been wound into his everyday learning at this point.

My brothers school has recently made an effort to better their technological standards by implementing digital SmartBoards in each classroom. These boards can act as a projector and whiteboard simultaneously. It should also be noted that the school has changed all of its cameras and security system to promote a safer school environment.

From a young age Jagger has loved shows and movies. He used to watch shows like cocomelon, blippi, or other titles that promoted learning. He could not yet do much but he could pay attention which kept him concentrated on the show. His teacher at preschool puts on videos for him to watch to help learn ABCs, addition, shapes, and colors. None of these were available when I was a kid, and especially not to that degree.
