Hello Class & Welcome to my Blog! My name is Martha Lizola and I am a sophomore at Stan State pursuing a degree in Nursing. Helping people and meeting new people is something that makes me extremely happy so what better way to do that than by becoming a nurse right? Some of my favorite things to do in my free time include reading self-improvement books, creating new memories with the people closest to me, and going to the beach.

Sustainability to me means doing things to protect our Earth. If everyone were to contribute even by doing the littlest things we could help save our planet. Ways of doing this is by recycling, saving energy, saving water, and many more ways. Ways I save energy and water is by using a little bit of it. I make sure to unplug unused appliances, and turning off everything before going to bed. I also turn off the water when brushing my teeth to conserve more water. I have also switched from buying water bottles to using reusable alternatives. We can all make a difference if we try.

When I think of information literacy I think about how important it is for us because it allows us to ask questions and seek answers when we learn something new. We are learning new things everyday from everywhere and we are in control of what we learn.

I would really love to learn more about both of these topics especially about information literacy because I am not too familiar with it.

Topic Proposal 09/01/2021

For my topic proposal I chose to focus on ending child hunger here in the United States. This topic falls under the environmental pillar of sustainability. The people involved in my topic are homeless or low-income children in the Untied States. This topic has been an ongoing topic for many years now. Knowing that children are dying because of them not having enough food or having healthy foods to eat is unbelievable. I chose to talk about the Untied States because it makes me sad that a country with so many resources and so much money is letting these children suffer like this! It's not okay for anyone to go days without eating food. Especially young children, this has impacted our environment in many ways causing health risks for children since they are not consuming the nutritions they need. Approximately 3.1 million children have died from undernutrition each year.

We could all make a difference by donating money each month or by giving food to children when you see them on the streets. The system has failed these children for many years now. Throughout the years many celebrities have started charities for ending child hunger which I find amazing but it's not enough because 3.1 million children are still dying yearly due to undernutrition. This is so important to me because knowing that I am fortunate enough to have food on my table and be able to buy food when I want makes me feel guilty. It makes me think of all those children who wish to at least have one meal a day. This research should be important for everyone because one day that could be us or our children.

I hope to learn how I can make a difference and how I can help these children. What are some way you guys would help out? What would you do in this situation? How do we help millions of children get food?

Rhetorical Analysis & Information Literacy

The article I chose to analyze is "Everyone is tired of always staying silent": Inside a Worker rebellion in the Central Valley" by Julie Lurie published by Mother Jones. The author is trying to bring awareness to the immigrant workers who are being treated poorly in their work environment in Central Valley. This article is about Veronica Perez's story, she was a nut-packing worker at Premix Farms and was not paying workers sick pay when the pandemic hit. They did not provide masks and if they did they charged the workers ten dollars a mask! Workers were testing positive for COVID but were still showing up to work because Premix would not pay their leave, or simply because Premix was keeping it a secret so that people would still come to work. After this, she became an advocate for these farmworkers. A rhetorical technique I will be analyzing is going to be the use of pathos. I chose pathos because this is a story I can relate to. I can relate to this because both of my parents are immigrants who worked in the fields while I was growing up. I would see them come home exhausted and sunburnt, sometimes even throwing up because of the heat. My parents stopped working in the fields many years ago but I stop and think about the what if's? What if my parents were still working & they got sick? Then we got sick? This made me remember what Ramirez said. "When I got up the next day, I didn't see anyone-not my wife, not my daughters," he says, "And I thought to myself, what's happening? Did they leave me alone? But no, each one was in their room, sick."(Lurie). When Ramirez said that I felt a wave of emotions. This was so sad! I can't imagine how guilty he probably felt for getting his family sick. All because Premix farms weren't informing workers about their coworkers testing positive for COVID. Even when people did know, there was nothing they could do but show up to work because they were the only source of income for their family. Premix and other agricultural communities need to do better. They need to start informing their workers about everything that could potentially be harming them, they also need to start paying them for sick leave. Workers need to know these things, especially if they have a family at home, sick family members, or just in general. This information is part of a continuing conversation. Problems like this have been going on for years, farmers get treated poorly, they don't get paid enough, they have to deal with being mistreated because they can't get a better job. Immigrants are getting treated poorly daily not just the ones working in the fields but in general, for years people have tried to get people to treat immigrant workers fairly but have not succeeded fully. It's sad to see this still going on for many years. When will we finally see the day that immigrants get treated the same way?

In the beginning of this blog I was struggling to figure out how to use EBSCOhost so I asked a librarian and I began chatting with Lisa who is from Washington State. She was able to help me with my key words and filtering. She helped me with what to put in the first search box, the second and the third. She told me to use quotation marks to search for exact phrases. After doing this I found my two articles that I found to be really helpful and that talk about my topic. Talking to a librarian was really helpful for my research question!
