Isha Shah > Kaleidoscopic Photos > I like this artist style because of the way the images are edited in post production. Very experimental edits and I feel like I could work in the style of this artist and still portray the gig atmosphere correctly.

I love the use of the double exposure/long shutter. It makes the image seem more manic and chaotic. The added red colour make the image seem much more intense, as I connote red as loss of power/intense power.

I could use the use of double exposure within my image in order to create more intense images, especially if the band I am shooting is more fast paced and rock.

https://www.ishashahphotography.com/#44

What I love about this image is that its almost like a panorama, from the way its been cropped. I also love how the photographer managed to catch the expressions on the drummers face, which really make the image pop. I also like the lighting coming in from behind the drummer, the blue tinge makes the artists in the image seem important and they use big atmospheric lights.

I could edit in this style of composition in order to create a more dramatic, atmospheric images with in my project. The wider angles make the scene feel more cramped, but jam packed with people.

Secondly, I could watch a tutorial in order to enhance the lighting situation, maybe to create a stronger beam coming from the light source.

Another idea would be to take a panorama of a concert that I might be shooting and capture the entire inside of the venue in 1 shot. This would make for a great atmospheric shot, especially if there's a good crowd and decent spotlights, It might just replica this image but have more room cramped into it. To do this I will watch a tutorial of YouTube on how to take a panorama on DSLR in low lighting. I could attempt this in the streets at night, to test the lighting, or at the Mayfare Gig on the 3rd of May 2019.

http://www.jessefox.net/about

I like this style of music photography as this is what you dont get to see, behind the scenes. I love how natural looking and raw the images are, with the touch of a flash or close up lighting. I think this is done through using old film cameras and dark rooms to develop them. I feel like this makes the artist more relatable this is more raw looking and makes the subject seem as equal as other people.

I could set up a photo shoot and have one light, or use the sun as a main source of lighting, and a subject to shoot with. Ideally, I would prefer the shoot to be inside.

Another idea would be to get to a gig early and photograph the band from behind the scenes. This means that the stage lighting would not be on so the image would come out raw looking or maybe, needing a flash.

https://www.charlottepatmore.com/

Pennie Smith - London Calling (1979)

- Made one of the the most famous photographs in the history of rock ‘n’ roll – the cover image for London Calling by The Clash.

Pennie Smith is an English photographer, known for her photography of the rock music industry. She specializes in black-and-white photography.

The photograph shows Paul Simonon about to smash up his bass during a show at The Palladium, New York City on 21 September 1979. It is an acclaimed shot, receiving the ultimate accolade from Q Magazine by being voted the best rock and roll photograph of all time. Pennie had accompanied The Clash throughout their 1979 US tour, and very nearly didn’t attend this particular concert. In the end she chose to turn down the offer to go out with friends and ended up stage right at The Palladium. The band were used to getting a big response from their US audiences, but not on this night – The Palladium had fixed seating. Paul’s frustration turned to anger, and then he lost it completely. His watch stopped at 9.50pm. Later, when it was time to choose an image for the cover of London Calling, the band spent a long time pouring over hundreds of Pennie’s photographs from the tour. Joe Strummer saw this shot on the contact sheet and said “That one”.

I love this style of photography, as it is one of the older images, the lower quality (noise) adds detail and a lovely amount of noise to the picture. However, what I am most drawn too in this image, is the depth of the shadows and how the light is being spilled onto the subject.

I could use the grain/noise effect with in my project, in order to make my images seem more older or worn.

I chose the images below in order to show the type of artistic style I want to achieve within my work. I love the contrast look between the dark blacks and the bright whites as it adds a more serious feel to the image.

I also dont want to just focus on musicians on stage, id love to get some behind the scene shots too, like the images below.

I have chosen this band to look into, as I have been brought up listening to them and loving them. I can feel their energy when I listen to their music, and you can feel the strength and respect, from looking at their pictures.

I love the different compositions and how the musicians are sometimes jumbled in together like a jigsaw in order to take the photo, followed bythe facial expressions produced by the front man. This establishes the connection between the band and the crowd.

I feel like I have the biggest connection with these artists and their style of photography.

As the bands style has became their image. I also love the old school styling of photography, where the image is slightly flat, and washed out.

This is a photo from a shoot I done for Palm Beach at Riverside, Newcastle. I love the facial expressions pulled by the guitarist, and the way the subject is leaning back as it adds personality to the image.

To edit this image, I had to bring up the mid tones, in order to brighten the image, as I shot it underexposed, with a high ISO to get the noise. I then turned it in to black and white in order to get the old image effect.

I feel like this image dosnt meet the depth of the blacks that Pennie Smith uses, so I dont think it is really in the style of the artist above. To improve, I think instead of upping the mid tones im going to drop them to get the desired effect.

This is a photo I shot for Mayfare at The Cluny. I was inspired by the above artist to play around with colour and overlaying/double exposure in order to get the finished result.

To edit this image, I turned the bottom layer in to black and white, imported the same image again, and placed it on top. I then turned down the opacity, after that I then messed around with the Hue/Sat in order to change the colour.

To make this image my own styling, I wanted to use the kaleidoscope effect I felt from the image from the above artist and used contrasting colours to fully deliver that effect.

What I don't like about this edit is that it seems too messy and maybe the colours are to vibrant to contrast nicely against each other. To be honest, I just dont feel like I've captured the same artistic styling as the above artist within my editing.

To improve this edit I think ill make the background image black and white and then put a red over cast on top of it, to make the image seem more in the style of the above artist.

Looking back at this edited image, I really quite hate it.

To do so I cropped down the image in order to make it look like a panorama, I then made it black and white and brought out the noise in the image.
This image is one of my favorite atmospheric shots I ave took, and I love the way I have edited it, making the image seem so dark, but the subject bright.

This links back to my research as, I ended up cropping the image in order to convey a small atmosphere, I also enhanced the light beam from behind in order to create a more intense/dramatic mood. It also links back to my word/theme as the image is a portrait (people), conveying a cramped, intense atmosphere of live act photography.

In the end this style of editing gives the finished image a deep and full feel. I like how this turned out, however I felt like I couldn’t add grain as the image looked more eye pleasing this way.

I chose this image because I know it would have a lot of deep blacks in it along with the light that shines down like in the above artists image.

I feel like this edit turned out much better and technically accurate that the first attempt.

Another image from the same artist that caught my eye was this close and intimate image of a band member and a crowd member. This photo feels very in your face but with just the right distance, I also like the type of lense used in this image which im guessing is a fish eye. I love this effect as it makes the ceiling slight curve which shows you the amount of people in the venue.

Is a band from Wallsend that I shoot gigs for quite regularly. I take a load of inspiration from their sound and lyrics. Their sound can only be described as Raw garage with a tinge of the 60s.

This style of music that this band plays makes me want to shoot under exposed images then edit in black and white, bring up the midtones and bring out the grain.

I love the 60s feeling as it reminds me of the end of Ferris Buellers day off when they play twist and shout in the street.

Palm beach actually remind me of the Scott Pilgrim vs. the world movie/soundtrack, with the slight distortions on the microphone, guitar and loud messy drums.

This film has been one of my favorites for the past 10 years, I love the soundtrack, film, and the editing styles/techniques. This scene is filled with a series of footage backed up with on screen editing. The extra effects like the 'Ds' to portray the music notes and the camera shakes for when the notes get heavier. I feel like I can capture these effects visually in a photography style and use it effectively in my work in order to enhance its effect on my images.

What I like about this artist is that they focus on double exposure photography. It makes the image more complicated and intense if your using it the right way. The colours in the images below contrast nicely and create weird atmospheric images.

I could use this technique within my work in order to show atmosphere or personality. These are really trippy effects and I feel like they would work really well with my word 'people'.

What I think would really work well is if I use the photos from the Palm Beach gig, as they are a 2 piece, and combine 2 of their images into a double exposure. I feel like it would work well and that the band might want it too.

http://starsandscarsphoto.com/about/

I feel like this image works as the overlay is the same image took at a different angle.

This image; I imagine, if I had seen it in a magazine, could have been took at a festival, although the top and bottom of the image feel like they’ve been chopped off, they give a festival feel towards the image which I like. In November 2018, I traveled to Leeds to see The Prodigy and they had similar video footage to what I have styled this exact image like, with the over lapping if the 2 images and the colour change on the see through layer.

I took inspiration from the artist Isha Shan when editing my images by using the same technique as she has.

REFLECTION OF SHOOT

How did you find the shoot?
The shoot its self, if feel, was fairly successful. I tried multiple shots with numerous angles resulting in perfect compositions. I also went more closer to the subject when taking photos even though it was canny scary.

Any problems you encountered?
There were no major problems mainly minors. Firstly, when going around the back of the stage towards the drummer, I was using my 50mm prime lense, which obviously doesn't zoom in or out, and I was very close to the subject and unable to get the shot I wanted because of this. Secondly, whilst doing this shoot, there was a full theater of audience which was proper awkward and nerve racking.

How did you overcome these?
I have learnt from my mistakes and now will evaluate the area im going to photograph and bring the appropriate lense with it. To overcome my own stage fright, I literally held my breath when I was moving around and diddnt look at the audience on the way back.

How did you choose the images to edit?
These images, to me, feel like promotional images, so I decided to edit them slightly, looking like real life edits. I have also experimented with overlapping images and making them unique.

EDITING STYLE?
I edited these images in black and white in order to convey atmosphere. The artist I can link this work to the most would be Pennie Smith for my use of Black and White. To improve this editing style in my next shoot, I am going to try and compose my images so that I can, in post production, add grain/noise.

My goal was to try and capture images from different angles and edit them in the style of artists I have researched.

Are you happy with the end results?
Personally I feel like the images I captured would be great for promotional purposes for the music department. However, I feel like I did not capture the images that I wanted to capture. I think the subjects 'music students' are about as uncomfortable as me when it comes to getting their photos taken so they tend not to look at the lense and make my job, for detail, even harder when im trying to capture the emotion and expression of their body movement/face.

How are you linking these images to your word and theme?
I am taking images of people which is my word, my theme is music/live act photography which is where I am focusing my photo shoots at the moment.

How has this shoot influenced the next?
I am going to learn from my mistakes and get in their face. For this shoot, they have told me that they would like really wide shots, atmospheric images as they have already accumulated a fair amount of close up portraits. As this band is has an instrumental/experimental sound, I feel like I can experiment with the images I capture, maybe by using light trails, or using a double exposure effect.

Adam Elmakias is a Music Photographer. He travels the world and photographs concerts, festivals, and backstage portraits.

What I like about this image, is that the lens gives a fisheye effect. This makes a difference from the other artists/images I have looked at as the image bends up the screen. I feel like this effect just gives a more atmospheric feeling.

I could use the same effect by attaching a little fish eye lens onto the back of my phone camera, as I do not have a canon fish eye. I have also looked for alternatives by transforming the image on Photoshop to fish eye, this just stretches the photo and brings you closer to the image.

I feel like using the lens would work effectively in order to get the same result as the above artist.

I really like the style of photography. Although the subjects are not on a stage, it is still a documented portrait. Most likeyl, this image was taken on an old film camera, hence why the image is so noisey. personally, I like the noise. I also love the contrast between the blacks and the whites, I think its the ocntrast that makes the entire image. I also really like how I can feel the connection between the 2 subjects in the image, it makes you feel as if its you sitting in front of them taking the image.

I am going to shoot a gig @TheGlobe tonight for Dutch Elm. As they want really wide/atmospheric shots, I have decided to take my fish eye lens for my phone in order to work in the style of Adam Elmakias, and capture the atmosphere in a diferent astyle. I also want to get lots of crowd shots, or photos of the band, through the crowd, either way I want very atmospheric shots.

What are you going to capture?
I am going to try and capture movement and energy. Hopefully these images will turn out slighly smudged due to the slow shutter speed I am going to test. This band are very loud and bounce about, I am going to trey and convey energy through movement (slow shutter) and through my editing, inspired by other artists.

Equipment

Canon 750d

Canon 5D

10-20mm (wide)

50mm Prime

Fish eye

18-55mm

Gorillapod

These contact sheets are from the shoot for Dutch Elm - 27/03/19. My main goal was to try and take images from different angles. I focus more on the face of the subject like I said in my last reflection, I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone.

Are you happy with the end results? I am fairly happy with the results, as I pushed myself to get the shots I wanted. I was basically rolling around on the dirty floor tryong to get the shots and angles I wanted.

How are you linking these images to your word and theme? These images are of my chosen word 'people'. To captre my themse of live act movement, I have started to loosen up the shutter speed and capture some movement within my images.

How has this shoot influenced the next shoot? I love the images took from a low angle, this shoot has inspired to to keep trying out weird and abnormal angles to take images of as it makes the image seem more intese, or like more is going on within the image itself.

How did you find the shoot? I loved this shoot, it was probably my most favourate one yet. I feel comfortable with the bands that were playing and we get on so its not awkward. if anything me knowing the band gets better images and they feel more comfotable infront of my camera.

Any problems you encountered?
A probelm I encountered was when I got home, the images of the 5D camera were slightly blurred, and I thought these were going to be my best images. Another problem I encunetered was my height, The band I wasshooting asked for some crowd shots, due to my height I was unable to get good shots of the crowd and the full band.

How did you overcome these? Next time I am going to grab a chair if there is a one available and stand on it to get the pics I need to get.
I encouraged the blur/movement and made the sole focus of the ruined images, movement, I edited them in a style that made them make sense and not messy.

How did you choose the images to edit? I picked the images with the most going on, or that has been isolated or has something eye catching in it. To edit, I had in mind, that I wanted to have some raw/room looking images and some distorted images. I chose images that were high contrast in order to match the style of Pennie Smith. To improve this style I could try to add grain/noise ontop of my images.

WILL YOU BE CARRYING THIS STYLE ON?
Personally I loved experimenting with color within my edits, however in order to capture the style of the 70s I dont think this is an effective way of getting this effect. I would prefer to carry forward the Black and White style.

LAST SHOOT INFLUENCE? y/n
My original plan for this shoot was to get in their face and grab some face portraits, instead because of the energy the band was producing, I decided to get my wide angle out and try to capture ther flow of the energy and the atmosphere that was surrounding the band. I wouldnt of been able to capture that my my 50mm prime.

What is the photographic story title? Gentlemen’s Club Bangkok.

What drew you to the story?
Typically, semi naked photos of men would make me run the other way however, knowing the context behind it, make the images more interesting. Its quite a unique and catchy title that they have used for the story, usually you dont get to see what goes on inside unless you actually are on the inside. Also, the portraits of the men are then backed up with the atmospheric shots of the tabs on the floor, or of the pink phone, these are all little details that adds to the bigger picture. Everything that is included in a dirty bedroom, the photographer focuses closely.

What is the common visual theme throughout the story?

Shadows

Low light

Minimalist

Emotions

Body position

Composition of small objects (central + isolated)

How have these images been composed to show the link between the theme and the emotional content of the images?
This photo essay is about a brothel in Thailand, all of these images have been constructed so you ca see the male perspective of prostitution as apposed to the stereotypical female side. You can tell in some of the images that the rooms are small and dirty, as there are minimalist photos of bins, tabs and other thing that might be laying around a hookers room. The men just look lost or lonely, by the expression on their faces supported by their body language. This makes me feel sad but also slightly uneasy as naked men would probably make most people feel uncomfortable.

"alternative, and subsequently pop, culture in the UK" is basically the audience I go for when targeting gigs, in the North East. Visually, what appealed to me most was the age of the images... You can tell they are older by the amount of grain and the composition styling. I love the use of the shadows with the black as it makes the light beams stand out.

How can this story link with your project? The majority of these images are crowd/atmospheric shots, I feel like I can explore this visual side of live act photography.

What is the common visual theme throughout the story?

Noise/Grain

Black and white

Movement/Motion

Low lighting

People

Texture

Environment

How have these images been composed to show the link between the theme and the emotional content of the images?
This photo essay is about the begging of alternative/pop culture in the UK. The images have been composed so that you can feel/see the atmosphere conveyed by the photographer + band. This has been done through the use of shadows. The atmosphere conveyed feels like an interlude, like everyone is waiting for them to start, inferred by the crowds facial expressions at the front. However we know the band is the main subject as we have this light spill/glow than just falls behind the darkened outline of the band.

This era and styling of photography really impacts me as the audience, I really feel a community atmosphere and the editing style is fitting with the venue.

Below is an inspired edit from the above photo essay.

I love this image showing Movement. The guitar is overexposed whilst everything else is under exposed, this creates a eye pleasing contrast for the viewer. What is also pleasing to the eye, is the light spill coming from behind the subject, bouncing off (causing the over exposure) the guitar.

I feel like this image is so simple the way it has been composed and also the way it has been edited.

Looking at this image makes me want to be at the front of the crowd at a gig. I also like how we are looking up to the subject, showing that they are the dominant/hierarchy. I could easily re create this effect as you just need a slower shutter speed, and your moving subject in lower light compared to the other subjects.

This type of composition is more atmospheric and you can actually see the size of the room and the relationship between the people and the people to the band.
How can you use this in your work?
I know there is a space like this at The Cluny where i might be able to compose an image in the same style as this.
How has it been composed/edited?
This image has been shot from above, maybe a small balcony, in order to show scale, and maybe to capture the havoc below.

I ripped up the image so that you can clearly see the rip mark along the side. I have done this in order to represent the genre, which is experiential/instrumental. I also feel like this is a powerful image as the rips add texture to it. This could represent anger or something that you dont want to remember. It also adds that extra edge, makes the image complete.

I was inspired to use this technique of ripping up paper and putting it back together by the poster for Richard Hell. I just feel like this makes the image stronger and unique: by adding texture and a grainier, lesser quality to the image.

However my 2nd attempt I feel is much better as it is bolder with the text.

I feel like this was successful as my intention was to create a professional looking, home made/hand made poster, in the style of the 1970s.

I was inspired by the poster design for The Clash to, include my own hand written information and to compose the poster. I thought the composition was really unique and stood out with the blacks against the whites and the positive space towards the top and bottom of the image.

This links back to my theme as the subject is isolated in the middle of the page, and the concept of the subjects image being ripped away from the rest of the image, makes the situation seem more emotive.

I feel like my attempt was successful and I think I will be using this technique again, in order to convey an atmosphere or to highlight a subject, colours could have effect.

I feel like this effect isolates the subject from the crowd making your eyes go straight to him. I also feel like this effect conveys a: low budgeted, small, rundown venue. I infer this from the scratches on the back wall and the coloring of the spot light.

I have been asked by NCL indie society to shoot this event from start to finish. This gig I know will be a struggle as there is minimal lighting, meaning one huge ugly spot light coming from the right hand side of the stage, and the background is lit with fairy lights. I know I am going to be shooting at a very high ISO. For this gig, as it is kind of work, I am going to focus on catching the bands having fun, along with some crowd interactions and emotions.

What are you going to capture?
For this shoot I am going to try and capture more portraits and gather up some crowd shots. I plan to do this beacuse I know this gig is going to be a good night, and most of the people there will be on the sesh, so I aim to capture personality.

I rocked up to the gig at 5pm (2hours before doors opened, 5 hours before Palm Beaches set(, so that I could catch them setting up and sound checking. I then waited around like a stalker following the band around with my camera, until the crowd started to show. I wanted to show the progression of people pooling into the venue, from soundcheck, to the end of the night, where the lead guitarist ran out of the venue and jumped out onto a car.

My editing style is black and white, with hints of noise, in order to show the contrast between the subject and the venue, as the venue was very odd as its a shak made of wood and hard to capture.

How did you find the shoot?

I enjoyed working this gig as it was fun. There were loads of problems that I encountered and had to overcome, so I was thinking on my feet trying to problem solve.

Any problems you encountered?

> Plan

What went wrong with my plan was that it couldn't happen. I set of with the intentions of capturing light beams within my images however, the venue was not the same venue as last time, this time we were underground, where as the proper stage with the lightning was upstairs being used. > I had to adapt and try and capture the subjects in a creative way, which was, high contrast, black and white images.

> Lighting

The lighting was absolutely terrible. To be clear, there was one spotlight hanging from the ceiling shining on to the band. problem with this light was that it was pure orange, and I only shined on the lead singer (front man) of the band. > This meant that I had to edit the images thinking of the shadows and the blacks, so my editing style for this shoot became: High contrast, Black and White.

> Crowd shots

The crowd was also a huge problem for me also nearly every life threatening. From the first set (serfa) the crowd were moshing, drinks were flying left, right and centre; people were being flung and chucked into me. > I found a balcony upstairs and got some shots from above, avoiding the crowd, capturing the mosh pits and the band together as one

> Photographers

No lie there was about 6 photographers at this gig which not only made it competitive, but made it harder to get my on unique shots that the others couldn't have. > I had to get creative and try out shots on the balcony, I was rolling around the floor trying to get the low angle shots too.

Any problems you encountered?
There were not many problems I encountered in this gig, However I did kind of take me a while to get into it. My images for the first band are terrible compared to the images I took for the rest of the gig.

How did you overcome these?
To overcome these problems I just kept switching between my lenses and changing around my camera settings.

How did you choose the images to edit?
I chose these images to edit as I though they were eye catching. Another factor that added to this decision was that these images already has ahigh contrast, which made the post production easier.

EDITING STYLE?
My editing style has slightly changed from the last shoot as I havedecided to use more contrast. This makes the image seem cleaner, and also makes the subject stand out more.

WILL YOU BE CARRYING ONTHIS STYLE?
I will be carrying on this style within my work as I feel its adds intensity to my images.

LAST SHOOT INFLUENCE? y/n
My last shoot inspired me to work with the fairy lights, in order to convey an atmosphere. Using these lights in the background makes the image much more flattering rather than having the subject stand in front of it, having the light spill caputed in the image.

Any problems you encountered?
A few problems I encountered...
Shutter speed was locked on the 5D and wouldn't change so I couldn't use that camera, so I was stuck using the 750d and swapping both lenses on to the body.

The venue itself is complacently made from wood on the inside, in the day time the sun just beams through the doors and over exposes everything, making it hard to get a nice photo. Also you have everything you could every image in your composition, the venue is just like a junk yard making my images look messy and flat, beacuse there is that much stuff in there.

Finally, when the guitarist ran out the venue and I ran out after him, I had to use the built in flash on my camera in order to capture him, only thing was it wouldnt focus on him, so I got the image, but its not in focus.

How did you overcome these?
I swapped my camera to the 750d and used that one for the rest of the night. In post production I brought up the black to compensate for the amount of whites and over exposure.

How did you choose the images to edit? I chose these images in order to show atmosphere + emotion. I also wanted something that catches your eyes when you view these images. I have started to add noise and grain in order to slightly age the images so that they look like theyve came from the 70s.

EDITING STYLE?
I have edited this style using techniques such as: Grain/Noise, Black and white, Filter Gallery and mid-tones. Using these techniques have alowed me to mimic styles from the 70s music photography scene.

Will you be carrying this style on?
I will be carrying this effect/style on within my work in order to make the images seem older, or took from a film camera.

LAST SHOOT INFLUENCE? y/n
My last shoot has influenced this shoot to shoot at a low angle. This effect makes the subject seem more heroic and like we should be paying more attention to them and what they are doing. I also edited in Black and White at a high contrast in order to show the 70s.

I have used the scribble effect in order to give my drawing some background detail, which reflects the venues interior, grungy.
I have attempted to convey the atmosphere as creepy and cold. I have also attempted to show the contrast in the image by using a white graffiti pen and a black sharpie.

Will you use this again in your project? This was really enjoyable and I had fun doing it however, i dont feel like it conveys much of an atmosphere.

This creates a personal atmosphere for the main subject, as the light is just beaming on him, lining it back to my theme: atmosphere an energy.

What techniques were used?
To complete this tutorial, I had to use tools as as the polygonal lasso in order to select around the light itself, then use the transformation key in order to place it correctly. The gradient tool was also used in order to make the beam see through. i then used the box blur tool in order to create the space around the light.

As far as my career is concerned, I never made a conscious decision to go pro—it just kind of kept on happening as I was having fun.”

I edited this image whilst watching the tutorial on how to create ambient light beams. I feel like this was very successful as it creates so ambiance within the image. I feel like it also makes the image seem more personal to the subject as you have the light shooting down, only on him.

I would really like to carry on this editing style as it seems very effective and is in the style of the 70s.

I have re-visited my attempt at my 70s style poster in order to make it seem more older. To do this I went and added some grain and then inverted the whole image. I feel like this is much more effective than my first attempt as you can see the atmosphere and ageing within the image. I also feel like this effect distorts the image and represents the genre abit more.

What does RGB and CMYK stand for? Also describe is the difference between these colour formats? Why is this important for you to know as photographer?

RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue and is an additive color model. What this means is that this color model is based on adding and mixing light – when you add Red, Green, and Blue light together, you create a pure white.

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Black) and is a subtractive color model. A subtractive color model works exactly opposite from an additive color model (RGB,) it works by partially or entirely masking certain colors from white.
For instance, an RGB color mode is ideal for an electronic source – such as your computer’s monitor, but due to the additive nature of the color mode, printing is not ideal. With an additive color model, you are adding colors via light wavelengths and creating new colors by lightening the Red, Green, and Blue color model using more or less light – hence why an electronic source is best, you are using an abundance of light to communicate color. While the CMYK color mode is ideal for printing, since the subtractive nature of the color model is subtracting the brightness from white (paper) by adding pigment. Since your computer monitor is emitting light and therefore attempting to communicate color with the addition of light, a CMYK color mode is not appropriate.

What different file formats are there? Name and describe them
.PDF (Preferred for most files)

PDF (short for Portable Document Format) is a file format developed by Adobe as a means of distributing compact, platform-independent documents. PDF captures formatting information from a variety of desktop publishing applications, making it possible to send formatted documents and have them appear on the recipient's monitor or printer as they were intended.

.EPS (Preferred for large signs and banners)

EPS (short for Encapsulated PostScript) is a vector format designed for printing to PostScript printers and imagesetters. It is considered the best choice of graphics format for high resolution printing of illustrations. EPS files are created and edited in illustration programs such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW.

.JPG (Preferred for images)

JPG (short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, and pronounced jay-peg) is a file format best used for photo images which must be very small files, for example, for web sites or for email. JPG uses lossy compression (lossy meaning "with losses to quality"). Lossy means that some image quality is lost when the JPG data is compressed and saved, and this quality can never be recovered.

.GIF and .PNG

GIF (short for Graphics Interchange Format) is a file format for storing graphical images up to 256 colors. It uses a lossless compression method which makes for higher quality output. PNG (short for Portable Network Graphics) was created as a more powerful alternative to the GIF file format. PNGs are not restricted to the 256 color limitation of GIF files and have better compression. A PNG file can be saved with a transparent background which allows you to place your image on top of another image without an outlining white box.

What is the best resolution size (image size) for Web and for Print?

-300

What Photo paper types are there?

MATTE

GLOSSY

LUSTRE

Which do you think you will use for your final prints & Why?
- Luster prints are slightly glossy, which helps enhance the image's color and details, but also feature a very fine "texture" to help reduce problems associated with glare and fingerprints.

How much would your final project cost? This shoot was more successful cause there was better lighting in the venue than surf cafe, and much more of a crowd. This image shows scale, or environment with in the venue. This edit also reminds me of the style of magnum photo essay: Philip Jones Griffiths, the Liverpool Scene.

My original idea was to explore portraiture within Atmosphere and Energy. I was able to do this by attending local gigs near me, however, my style drastically changed as I started to edit in the style of the 70’s (a style which I now prefer). My final set of images still show energy and atmosphere and link back to my original idea, I just want them to seem aged, like from the 70s.

The type of shots I was going for were: the subjects being freaks (abnormal on stage) facial expressions and everything else that would contribute the to personality of the subject. Full body shots, as if you were standing there at the front of the crowd, everything you see. This was hard to do due to the lighting in some of the venues and the subjects constantly moving around.

I am actually quite pleased with the end result, as to me, these images represent the 70s and are in the style of too. I love the editing style as it makes the images seem more aged and all together adds more texture.

Within this project I have learnt: How to add light beams in images using blend modes, Fill in unwanted spaces of image using contents aware, Double exposures within experimental editing, playing with colour, adding texture and grain to an image, making the image seem aged.

To improve, I would love to be able to get in more funded venues, such as the 02 Academy. I feel like attending venues as such, would bring up the quality of my images and also enhance the environment. What I mean is, that it would probably bring in a much better crowd, the light + sound systems would be better and the crowd would be less intimate ( like the gigs I have been attending) and start being much more radj. I could maybe focus more on the personalities in the crowd than the band shots.

In the future, I want to not run with my very first idea, I would like to spend more time brainstorming so I know exactly what I want to do and explore. I feel like this would benefit me immensely and make my projects seem much more professional.

My last photoshoot will end the project in thinktank? in Newcastle. Japanease tv Club are a band who ive never seen live before, but have quite a few songs out and play a load of regular shows. I also have never shot a show in thinktank? so this will be a new experience and I know I will need to be focused (to deal with the low lighting) and hands on (for the lens changes).

I am heading up to thinktank? tonight in order to shoot the Japanese Tv club gig in Newcastle.
As this is a close and intimate venue, I am going to aim to capture crowd shots, close ups and full body shots. I am going to to this so that my images will be able to tell a clear story of the event.

----
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO CAPTURE?
By doing this, I am going to have to capture surrounding environmental factors such as: Signs, Instruments and Alcohol etc. I want my images to look like they have came out of the magnum photo essay titled 'the Liverpool scene'

To be honest, I dont know a single person gong to the even or in any of the bands, so im just going to rock up with my camera and shoot everything I can. Think tank? is kind of like a cave, like the photo essay, so it wil be easy to get dark and atmospheric shots.

Are you happy with the end results?
I am proper angry with this photo shoot since I have nothing to work with.

How are you linking these images back to your word and theme? These images are full body shots of the band, showing their style/personality.

How did you find the shoot?
This shoot was har, stressful and annoying. I was so annoyed that I had prepared everything correcly and as usual, for it not to work. I couldnt even get my phot out as there was no storage.

Any problems encountered?
SD CARD FAILURE

How did you overcome these?
I jumped straight onto amazon and ordered abunch of SD Cards and from now, I am going to aim to buy 1 SD card every week, so that this cant happen again.

How did you choose with photos to edit?
I diddnt have many to choose from so the choice was really layed out infront of me. I chose theone that made the band look most flattering and toned it with acid yellow.

Editing style?
70s/ Acid yellow colour, used in posters with the sex pistols and other related merch. Grain in order to age the photo abit and give it some texture.

As soon as I arrived to the gig, I put my SD card in the camera and the screen said "SD card full" lucky me I put an extra 5 in my bag. However it was just my luck that every single one was corrupt. I was pure foaming at the fact I couldn't do anything and that I had re-formatted all of the cards before the shoot - working perfectly.
