A metaphor in language is when one thing is described by making a comparison to another thing. For example, "the cliff edge of a 'no-deal' Brexit". Although no deal cannot literally be a cliff edge, it is a comparison to imply the dangers and unknown aspects of such a scenario. 
A word related to metaphor is simile, which is also a comparison, but which uses "like" or "as"- e.g. "She sings like a bird"
