People can't live in areas that are to wet, dry, hot, cold, or high(altitude). In areas that are too wet, there is no foundation for building shelters. People need water so dry areas are rough for living, hot areas can hurt your body, and cold areas make it hard to produce food and water. In areas of a lot of height, there is not much oxygen.

No person has ever lived in the air, in a cloud, or in a plane of some sort, We just don't. The land is our home. If we didn't have land, everyone would have to have a houseboat. You have you build houseboats on land, however, so there is no hope for us without land. We have to modify the land to fit whatever needs we have too, based on the climate and recurring natural disasters of different places in the world. In California, where there are many earthquakes, the bridges and buildings have to be built based on the fact that everything can be easily destroyed in the massive quakes. In Hawaii, the climate is very warm, so the homes have to be built based on hot weather year-round. Here, in Illinois, we have to be prepared for all four seasons. That means we need snow plow trucks for the winter as well as air conditioner- repair jobs. I could go on and on, but on the whole, every place has its needs and the people around those needs modify their lifestyles and work to fulfill those needs.

It says, "Sustainability is the use of earth's limited resources by humans that do not constrain resource use by people in the future. Geographers emphasize that each resource has a distinctive capacity for accommodating human activities." This is the first glimpse that the book gives us. It tells us that sustainability is helpful to human activities(to a certain extent) if used with care. However, with these resources that are given to us, a lot of pollution has been created. Even economic growth can harm the environment, but there is no way to stop it. As the population increases and more babies are born, more money will be spent and more people will work, and this is where our problems begin. The reason working affects this is because no matter where you work, there is some resource you use that comes from a factory. Computers, ads, and gas are all factors of pollution. We use all of those. We use them in work, home, school, and everywhere else. They come from places that cause pollution. That's where sustainability comes in. If we sustain our resources, they will create less pollution and keep the world a safer, cleaner environment.
