There is a certain part of your life that you can go places. People would wait until they are in college or the last 2 years of high school before leaving. The best time to leave is when your old enough but also before you are too old, because then you would already be set in your ways.

Bringing it back to the fact that no one wants Lori to leave and they expected her to stay, somewhere in the passage Lori does state that people have left before and come back. They aren't the same as when they left but they were still accepted back. If they leave at an older age, like in their 30s, it would be harder for them to adapt. Adults have a harder time learning and adapting compared to teenagers. Also if they leave when they are older, they wouldn't have as great an education, which would make leaving successfully harder.

I will say she had accomplish a lot, she may had get into college by the fact she is a Native American, but the fact that she graduate and overcome the disadvantages she had due to poor education system in reservation make this story encouraging.
