II / 1. Life and work of Edgar Allan Poe.:

II/ 2. The Black Cat Summary

This story is about how a man's life who loves animals, turns into a nightmare.

We start off with the narration of the main character. We get to know him a little. Since he was a child he loved animals. He as an adult has many pets and he loves them all, especially cats. He got married, his wife shares the love with the man towards animals. The sad story begins here because the man starts drinking and goes out of his way. One day he got home drunk and with the lack of straight thinking he thought Pluto didn’t want to hang out with him, he gets mad and carves out one of its eyes. The cat soon recovered and started wondering around the house as usual but with dislike towards rather than love towards the main character. this irritated him so he hung up the cat from a limp of a tree. Within the upcoming night a fire accured in the man’s house, he, his wife and another person escaped but the house was almost entierly destroyed. Only one wall „survived” and on that wall there was the shape of a cat wich was hung up, just like pluto. This image haunted the man for month from there. One day the man was hading home drunk when he met a black cat just like pluto, except this cat had a white are of furr within its breast. As he moved closer to the cat it immedietly shown love for him. The cat followed him home. The man at first loved the cat, he thought this creature was the thing he needed, the rescue from the nightmares pluto left. But soon he began to dislike even hate the cat. However the cat continued to love the man and even follow him around everywhere. the white spot ont he cat quickly grown into a shape of a gallows. One day the man and his wife was going down the stairs and the cat as usual followed him, he almost even tripped because of it. This was too much for our „not entierly sain” main character. He grabbed an axe and tried to kill the cat, but instead he killed his wife who tried to protect the cat from the axe of death. Since the action happend in their house no one expect the man and the cat have seen it. The man decided to hide his wife lifeless corps in the wall. He wanted to kill the cat right after buti t appeared the cat was smarter than he thought and it ran away or híd somewhere. Either way the man felt way better, a couple of days passed and the guilt in his hearth was very little,he was happy, he felt like he was finally free. The next couple of days the police came around to search, it looked like the man was innocent. The police was just about to leave, since they didn’t fin anything there was no point in staying any longer. The man filled with pride and happiness he admired the wall he „built” and said to the police officers how well this house is put together and how well he constructed the walls. As he was saying this he knocked the wall a couple of times. These knocks caused his failure because just after he knocked a cats „cry”-ing sounds could be heard from the direction of the wall. A police officer stood in place for a couple of seconds, then turned back and ripped the wall apart. After that it was clear that the corps was built right into the wall after the fire and the cat who caused the mans failure was right there too. The man got hung up just like pluto.

I/1. Why do we love?

Does love make our life meaningful?

Is it just an escape from our loneliness and suffering?

Is it just a disguise for our sexual desire?

Or a trick by biology to make us procreate?

Is it all we need? Do we need it at all?

Plato’s theory:

Plato was an ancient greek philosopher who said: „love makes us whole again”. What does is mean? Well, in his „symposium” he wrote a about a party between greek gods where one of them told the story of „love”. The story was: All humans once were creatures with four legs four arms two heads and a single torso (a rather large one..probably..). One day they angered Zeus, so he sliced them in half. Since then every person missed the half of him/her-self, so we love to find a „soulmate” who can make us whole again. [or at least that’s what Plato believed a drunk comedian god would say in a party.]

Arthur Schopenhauer’s theory:

Arthur schopenhauer was a german philosoper in the eighteen hundreds, who belived that „love tricks us into having babies”. He believed that we love just to procreate, and after we’re done with maintaining our species we get thrown back into our tormented existence. That way our only real success was giving humanity another member(s).

Bertrand Russel’s theory:

Nobel prize winning British philosopher Bertrand Russel Who live between the eighteen and the nineteen hundreds, who thought: we love to satisfy our physical and psychological desires, and without passionate love sex is unsatisfying. He said we fear the curel word, we don’t want to get hurt by it! So we built hard shells to protect and at the end isolate ourselves. Love is a great solution for this, it is the way to break out from out lonely shells and engage more abundantly in life. Love enriches our wole being making it the best thing in life.

Buddha’s theory:

Buddha said that “love is a misleading affliction”. What he means by that is: With love we try to satisfy our desires, but the whole thing is defective, and love is a great source of suffering. Then buddha discovered the eight-fold path, which was sort of a program for extinguishing the fires of desire. He then thought we need to discover it to get to the state of peace.

Cao xueqin’s theory:

In one of china’s greatest classical novels he illustrated that romantic love is folly. In the story (dream of the red chamber) Our main character falls in love with a woman(xi-feng) who tricks and humiliates him. This torn him apart emotionally. Another character(thaois) came into the story and gave him a magic mirror that can cure his emotional suffering if he doesn’t look at the front of it. He looks the front of it, and he sees xi-feng. Not only he got depressed again but also his soul got sucked into the mirror and he’s dragged away in iron chains to die. The moral of the story is that romantic love should be avoided.

Simone de beauovir’s theory:

“Love lets us reach beyond ourselves.” She proposed that love is a desire to integrate with another, and it infuses our lives with meaning. She’ theory is romantic love can be so captivating, we can make it our only reason to live, we can make ourselves so dependent from another person that we can not see our lifes without him/her. And it can easily lead to a boring existence. to avoid this she suggests to love authentically, this works more like a great friendship, this way people support and care for each other but with less dependence.

My opinion:

Well, I think these people above all made understandable points, but I do not agree with all of them. I think love is a really important part of our life. I somewhat agree with the “love authentically” thing, but the bond between on another is an important part of romantic love, which should be kept. Love has always been about desires, and I think it’s right this way.

Red death was a diases wich made people bleed from their skin and die within hte next 30 minutes(it wasnt too pleasent),prince prospero and some pople (1000 healthy friends of the prince)locked themselves into the castle wich was "imposible" to enter or leave after they closed the gates where the prince entertained them and made a costume party within the 7 rooms.1-blue2-purple3-green4-orange5-white6-violet7-black/red=windowsEveryone enjoyed moving through several rooms, there was only one exeption, no one wanted to go in the seventh one, there was a huge clock in it wich made a sound every hour. The sound was so strange, it made the musicians and the dance stop while it lasted. When the clock struck midnight the music and the dancing stopped. A tall skinny person cane into scene, It was dressed as the red death, it was covered in blood and wore a red masque. When the prince saw it, he became upset. He yelled and (commanded?) saying take off his masque and and take him outta here..hes gonna be hung by the wall of the castle as the sun rises. Everyone was afraid of the stranger and tried to back off. The maqued man went right pass the prince and towards the purple room, made the prince even angrier and he rushed after the masqued , the stranger suddenly turned around, the prince responded with holding up a knife. Moments later the prince screamed, dropped the knife and his now lifeless body fell down to the castles floor. Then a group of people grabbed the masqued figure, but he dissapeard, his masque and the rest of the costume fell to the ground. Everyone gasped in horror. The red death got into the castle. He had come like a zhief in the night. One by one the people in the catsle all died. As the last person died the clock stopped ticking and the fire on torches extinguished. The castle was empty, atleast there was not a single person alive in it anymore. All the people died with a despaired posture. The clock was ebony black

Missing piece

The missing piece meets the big O

A missing piece can only be whole if it's bonded with a circle with the right fit.

Our 'protagonist' piece searched for it's circle but with little sucsess, with every circle came at least one flaw:
some fit but could not roll, some could roll but did not fit, some did not know anything about fitting, some did not know anything about anything, some were too delicate, some put it on a pedestal and left it there, some had too many pieces, some had too many missing, some earned to hide from the hungry ones, some looked too closely and some just rolled by without any notice...

One day a circle came along that was just the right fit for our missing piece, but as time passed the piece started growing so their bond could not be continued so their paths differed from then on. Later something came across our little piece, it was different, it was a perfect circle without a piece, called the big O. At first the piece thought 'O' was his 'other half' the big however denied since it had no place for a piece but it suggested that perhaps the piece could try to roll by itself. That was not only unheard but considered impossible
by the piece. After a short thought on the idea, the piece tried rolling.
Due to its hard edges its was difficult and extremely slow at first, but as time passed and the piece kept trying its edges started to soften and after a while it became a circle, an O some would say...It joined up with the big O and they rolled.
