• *is a species of caudate amphibian of the family Ambystomatidae. It is endemic to the lake system of the Basin of Mexico and has had a great influence on Mexican culture. It is in critical danger of extinction.
• *It measures about 15 cm in total length, with rare specimens measuring more than 30 cm. The ajolote has the appearance of a giant tadpole with legs and a tail.
• *he majority are dark brown with a black back, lighter belly, and faint, inconspicuous dark spots on the flanks and back.
• *Their diet is very varied and in the wild includes small fish, fry and acocile (Cambarellus spp.). In captivity, they are commonly fed tubifex worms, earthworms, tenebriums, maggots and small pieces of raw turkey, chicken or beef meat.
