Polyphemus is the Cyclops son of the god Poseidon and a nymph Thoosa. He inhabits Sicily, an island off the coast of Agrigento. Many depict Polyphemus as a monster who harasses humans to eat them. "He towered over mortals and while he had two eye sockets like man, they were empty. He then had a single eye in the center of his forehead". Though Polyphemus was bloodthirsty, he was gentle with his wife and four children.

Polyphemus lived on Sicily with the other Cyclopes, a place where Odysseus had to travel past on his journey home from the Trojan War. Odysseus and his crew took refuge in Polyphemus’s cave and ate all of their food. They expected Polyphemus to welcome them as guests, however, they were startled to find him angered that strange men had broken into his home and eaten his food. Polyphemus proceeded to block the cave entrance with a bolder and eat two of Odysseus's men before night and two more in the morning as he left to tend to his sheep. Polyphemus asked for his name and Odysseus replied saying his name was “No Man.” After he fell asleep Odysseus stabbed him in the eye and Polyphemus screamed that “No Man” was blinding him. “His friends thought that a god had attacked him and told him to pray,”(Greek Mythology, Para. 2). Since Polyphemus was now blind, Odysseus and his men were able to escape by tying themselves under the backs of sheep and walking out with them. After they had escaped, Odysseus told him his real name. Polyphemus’s character assists in revealing Odysseus’s ego. This encounter was a perfect example of how his ego constantly gets the best of him.

The fight between Odysseus and Polyphemus portrays the theme of pride. Odysseus blinds him and hides under the sheep in order to escape the cyclops’ cave. When he left, only six of Odysseus’s crew were alive; four had been eaten by Polyphemus. After he tricks Polyphemus and blinds him, Odysseus reveals his real name so that all would know that he was the one responsible for injuring the cyclops. Polyphemus cursed Odysseus in Poseidon’s name after he discovers his true name. Due to Poseidon being the god of the sea, the curse created difficulties for the crew, and most were killed as a result of the plague. Odysseus mainly told Polyphemus his real name because of his pride and ego. He let his desire for praise and glory overcome his common sense, which is the main cause of his problems.
