After attending Dr Helen Little workshops,I understand that it is important to draw a distincition between risks and hazards. Back in the center, we discussed as a team as we revisited our policy to mangage hazard and this allowed teachers to be empower and be more confident in conducting activities at the outdoor spaces with young children. Working with children on setting the rules for risky activities empowers children and helps them to build their risk appraisal skills.

We had a great one year learning and sharing with other PASTELs and from Dr. Helen Little.

We learnt the importance of risk assessment and understanding the reasons why some educators do not want to participate in outdoor activities with the children.

We had shared our knowledge gained during the past one year with our educators during the centre visits and during our trainings; helping them to understand the challenges that they may faced and ideas/strategies for outdoor activities. Educators have given good feedback and are looking forward to more ideas/strategies!

Outdoor Learning experiences are intentionally planned to support children’s learning through play, exploration and discovery outside the classroom. Besides utilizing the environmental space for physical activities, other learning opportunities include “Learning about the Outdoors” where educators provide children with the learning experiences to find out more about the outdoor environments - the elements of nature and the people and places within the community and “Learning through the Outdoors” by tapping on the unique characteristics of the outdoors to support children’s holistic development.

Wherever possible I would plan for and extend classroom learning experiences in the outdoors with the available resources to support children’s holistic learning. Recent activities for my three-year olds include a healthy picnic following the class learning about nutrition and exploring mark-making through sweeping outdoor pathways using self-made “stick brooms” out of stick (twig) bundles.

The outdoor learning experiences had expanded my colleagues’ perspectives about the different learning opportunities in the outdoors for purposeful learning.

I had learnt the Seven Cs of outdoor learning environments that help to design outdoor play spaces which support the development of young children and integrate the unique qualities of playing outdoors. These 7 principles are used as a guidance tool when educators create outdoor play spaces.
Sharing of knowledge with the educators during our T & L session help educators to understand how they can more effectively design outdoor play spaces. Educators are also aware of the difference between “hazard” and “challenge” when creating outdoor play environments with their children.

It has been an enriching and informative one year of outdoor learning and sharing.

Having a risk assessment tool and to have an open mindset enabled me to be more adaptable towards outdoor learning. With the risk assessment tools, educators are able to assess their spaces and plan strategies on how and where they can implement their lessons. The educators at my centre have used the risk assessment tool before having outdoor activities. Positive changes do take time and I hope within the next few months, the teachers will be more receptive towards outdoor learning. We as educators have now taken into consideration of the hazards around the centre before we bring the children out.
