Shared interests and concerns do help to create relationships with students.  Each year I create a get to know you survey about students' interests and concerns. I really liked your comment about growth mindset. Your thoughts on how the book showed us that growth mindset needs to be more methodical rather then using growth mindset phrases as platitudes. We track how we assess content level skill so I suppose tracking how we help to grow growth mindset is relevant.
