Essential Questions:- Why do people value objects, artifacts, and artworks and select them for presentation?- How much impact do wealth and privilege have in producing, storing, exposing, and publishing art to the public? What challenges would be presented for artists who do not have the means of exposure to their art?

This is The New York Times Art and Design section article addressing the historical prevalence of white male artists represented in the national museums and the ongoing attempts by those institutions to change that narrative. The museum curators are increasingly trying to include artists of color and women in the museum exhibitions and to show the historical pieces but present them from different viewpoints, representing today's perspectives. It can be a good introduction to my Visual art analysis of the artist Iris.

This book is a contemporary work about the articles, people, and events that seemingly do not seem to support racism but inadvertently support the white-dominated society and culture. The stories were used without any additional nuanced commentary that justifies racial inequalities. This would be a good additional information to my art lesson.

This article about seven works of art (and artists) shed light on the racism in the US. Their perspectives visually explore the serious issues that institutionalized racism in America is present today. The commentary adds to the visual pieces and can be a conversation starter about today's society, representation (and non-representation) of black artists in the US.

This is a book about Anne McCarty Braden (1924-2006), a woman who rejected her segregationist, privileged past to become one of the civil rights movement's staunchest white allies. In 1954, she was charged with sedition by McCarthy-style politicians who played on fears of communism to preserve southern segregation. She is a great example of someone who countered racism and jeopardized everything for social justice. The information about this person and her life can be compared to the artist we analyze for the lesson.

The article is about Iris Apfel, a former trade and businesswoman who instantly became a fashion icon and had a show at Met Museum. The article is interesting to examine from a series of different viewpoints. For example, asking questions like "How did she acquire her business"?, and "Which countries did she do business with, and which countries did she manufacture her garments?" She talks about seemingly neutral topics and the interviewer does not attempt to ask her more nuanced questions. Why is that? This interview is rich in text and a direct source for the class discussion about this person.
