Although our planet is called Earth, 71% of its surface is covered with water. Most of the time, the ocean has always been seen as an almost inexhaustible resource, too big to be influenced by it. This also causes us to mistreat the ocean, filling it with garbage and waste. Together with the effects of climate change, they become serious threats to ocean life.

You probably don't live in water, and you can live without eating seafood. So why should you care?

Oceans absorb 90% of global warming
It takes more heat to raise the temperature of 1kg of water by 1°C than it takes to raise the temperature of 1kg of air by 1°C. Using scientific terms, this means that water has a very large specific heat.

Image of Specific Heat
Specific heat

The ocean has absorbed more than 90% of the heat accumulated on the planet over the past 50 years or so. If this heat were absorbed by the lowest 10km of the atmosphere, we would have seen an increase of about 36°C in temperature!

Instead, all that heat warmed the ocean. Most of the warming takes place about 75m below the sea surface, increasing to about 0.4-0.5°C over 40 years. This is much less than 36°C due to the heat capacity of the water.

But that's not all! The oceans also contain up to 25% of the carbon we release into the atmosphere. This storage comes from oceanic life, and by the amount of CO₂ dissolved in seawater.

The ocean's storage of heat and CO₂ has kept the Earth's climate stable regardless of human activities. It is commonly known as a buffer to reduce climate change.
