This is one of Poland’s most popular sweet food, typically eaten during Christmas, Easter, wedding reception, birthdays or special occasions. It is made from yeast, cooked, grounded poppy seed and delicacies. According to folk tradition, eating "makowiec" would bring happiness and girls who ground poppy seeds would get married quickly. A little extra piece of information - I’ve heard that this is the favorite cake of Roman Polański, Polish movie director.

Traditional Polish cheese like Oscypek are made of salted sheep’s milk from the mountain meadows of south Poland - the Tatra Mountains region. They’re made by smoking in a wooden oven or hut called a Bacowka.

The process is so well known that in order to preserve the tradition and methods since 2007 it is protected by the EU as a traditional specialty. Górale, Polish highlanders, one of Polish ethnic minorities have made this product for ages. To know more about them and their unique culture take a trip to Zakopane!

Oscypek is a delight for the palate, salty, smoked and delicious when baked or barbecued, toasted a little and accompanied by a cranberry jam! It is a perfect snack!

unlike other countries, we typicaaly do not have a hot lunch. In fact, lunches are there for nutritious reasons, rather than social or time consuming events. At my school, everybody carries a breadbox with slices of bread and anything ranging from cheese to marmalade on them. Yes, it is true, we eat cheese, but also peanut butter, sausages or sweet toppings. If they have survived the temperature, allow yourself a bit or two....
