General Information

I decided to go to the beach and the park to clean up trash. I went with Malea, but we weren't in a group together. We went to Huntington Beach and just walked from the pier for about an hour picking up trash and picked some up on the hour walk back. We then went to Mile Square park and circled the baseball/softball fields, picking up whatever trash we saw whether they were inside the gated fields or outside.

We didn't really have to do much planning beforehand, as I was able to drive us to the beach on my own, we just needed a day we were free. The materials we brought were some bags.

How We Helped the Community

Us coming to our local beach and park to clean up trash helped the community because we got rid of a lot of the harmful litter everywhere. These plastics stay in out environment for many years, taking forever to break down. They also get eaten by the wildlife sometimes, and that is very harmful for them because they cannot digest these plastics. Cleaning the trash also helped out community because aside from making these sites safer, it keeps them looking nice and pristine. Nobody likes looking at trash everywhere.

One connection I made from doing this project to literature we've read in class was how William from TBWHTW would scavenge in his village's junkyard for "trash" that he could use in the crafting of his windmill. Cleaning these sites reminded me of that because although we were not looking for trash to build something, we were looking across the sand and grass for anything we could pick up. Another connection I made from doing this project to something we read in our class is how in Animal Farm the animals would take care of the farm to ensure that it stayed safe/clean for everyone. This is like what we were doing, picking up the litter to ensure that our beloved beaches and parks are safe and are at optimal cleanliness for humans and animals alike.

Before I had gone out to actually pick up trash from the beach and park, I thought it wasn't going to be super fun and that at most I would just be content with what I was doing. I thought it was going to be hot and I would have wanted to go home every little second I was there, regardless of how much I loved the beach and wanted it to be clean. I had originally chosen this action for my project because it was something I felt strongly about, I had loved the beach from a young age. It had always pained me to see trash everywhere while knowing that seagulls, sea turtles, and other wildlife were eating plastics that humans had left. But as I started to pick up the trash, it became less of a "chore" and more of something I actually really enjoyed doing. I found that I loved looking for the trash and picking it up, once looking over the sand finding many colorful plastics to filling up my bag and looking back to find nothing but sand. I loved knowing that I saved a few birds and animals from having a painful time trying to digest those plastics. I loved knowing that I made the beach and the park a nicer place to be in and look at. I had made nature natural again, and I loved that. I've learnt to be more mindful of myself and my trash, along with the trash of those around me, making sure they all get to the place they were meant to be disposed in. I'll definitely be going back out again to pick up trash, maybe next time with even more people.
