I think the cause of Poe's death was from some type of brain disease. Mrs. Shrew diagnosed him with some sort of lesions on the brain. And Poe also wrote, “I have been so ill — have had the cholera, or spasms quite as bad, and can now hardly hold the pen . . .” (Ostrom, Letters, p. 452). Poe also had fits of "madness" followed by his sudden death. The symptoms of a brain fever are confusion, drowsiness, hallucinations, lack of muscle coordination, changes in behavior/personality, intellectual disabilities, speech issues, and vision and hearing problems. The lack of muscle coordination can explain his trouble writing. And the changes in behavior/personality can explain his "madness" To debunk the cooping theory, I believe he could have been walking around in someone else's clothes due to hallucinations and confusion from the brain fever.

I believe that people are going to believe what they want to believe at this point. There is small amounts of evidence to support each idea. The first idea being that he died from his issues with alcoholism, which stemmed from Virginia illness(1842-1847) and continued onward after that, with accounts

It is quite sad that Poe's death was in all accounts one where he heavily suffered. He suffered greatly throughout his life and his final moments were also full of pain. Once I read the biography and the following theories on Poe's death I concluded that the most probable was the alcohol theory. As mentioned it must have been a mix of factors but the alcohol pushed him over the edge, "It has been suggested that poor nutrition and a weakened condition brought on by other illnesses could have allowed delirium tremens to occur with fewer and less intense episodes of drinking than would normally be required, but none of these offerings completely explain his condition and the change of clothing." I think this to be the most probable theory because the evidence supporting it is a lot. There are accounts from others who had first or second hand experience of Poe in his final moments.

It's sad how Poe died and there are so many theories on his death. The theory that makes the most sense to me is the, "Disease and Other Medical Problems". He was diagnosed by a doctor and a nurse that was trained stated that he had suffered from brain fever and lesions to the brain which is brain damage. This brain damage could have been caused from trauma or a birth defect, but might not cause any symptoms until later on as the lesions worsen. This could have been possible since back then medicine wasn't as advanced an finding his brain damage late could of resulted in his death. Poe could just have possibly not been in a healthy state at that point he died especially with us brain damage.

Before reading "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe" I was leaning toward the "Alcohol Theory." As I read the summary of theories I quickly changed my mind to the "Disease Theory." All while i was intrigued by the "Cooping Theory." When I finished reading the theories I am now almost convinced that the cooping theory may be the closest to the truth. The reason for this is that I am really big on conspiracy theories. I feel that so many other public deaths are mostly planned for a reason. And Poe's death may not have been planned like a few others that I will not go into. I think that Poe was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Due to Poe's well known status, his death was more than likely covered up as to not draw attention to the cooping. With so many theories on Poe's death we will never really know his true cause of death.

I think I remember having read something about his body not having been found (which I'm not completely sure of so don't take my word for granted), and the theory is that he was kidnapped in the road as he was on a trip across somewhere else, and then killed. Again, just being completely empirical here, as I'm not even sure I can trust my own memory here.

I found the cooping theory very intriguing behind Poe's death. I don't think it was merely a coincidence that he was found with a different set of clothes on in his final moments; he had to get them somewhere and then be found somewhere else in not good shape. He was clearly exploited by the gangs seeking political power amid a high stakes election. While I do believe this theory, it is possible that underlying medical conditions worsened his particular outcome. Him having a "weak heart" certainly took a toll on his life as the gangs virtually tortured Poe and coerced him into voting against his will. He was surely at the wrong place at the wrong time.

In my opinion, due to my own circumstances, I truly have no favorites of the case by case "causes" that might have led to the death of Edgar Allen Poe. The life of the "Dark Poet" was always led just almost as unreasonably random, so it is to begin with hard to single any of the cause(s). My reasons further for picking no obvious clear cause is due to my fictionalized writings in my novel series, to which by happenstance, the "Dark Poet" is also one of my collective subjects. I would judge none of the causes to actually be due to his death in reality, but more towards a combinations of the accounts. Within my opinion, I believed he died from trauma to the organs( liver) which caused micro-clotting of fats leading to brain death. If you take all those theories with correlationships around his death it starts to paint a picture of the background of how he was killed (possible tech./ murder). It would go as, Mr. Poe arrived in Baltimore by train, had a "meeting" with friends from some part of his past, "they all drank". The friends lost or left Mr. Poe in certain parts in certain peoples' company, the people there, drugged him further for "cooping", but realized after speaking with him that he could not vote in that state. They sent him out after stealing his affects, and Mr. Poe wandered through the wards in the place they left him. Mr. Poe stumbled and fell near the street and got up going on, not realizing he had had some small (hairline) fracture(s). Mr. Poe stumbled about until he was found in the 4th ward needing "assistance to get home", to which the Dr. Snodgrass and his Uncle took him to the hospital. This narrative of speculations have bits and pieces from some of the other "causes" accounts, and they would sound pliable, would you not agree?

That being said, I definitely think The Cooping Theory intrigues me most. Though, it's mentioned that Poe would've been the least likely candidate to double dip in electing due to his well known status, I think it's also worth evaluating that the Coopers may have never intended on using him for flawed votes but rather captured and killed him to put on display as a distraction to take the heat off the Cooping.

I had never heard of “Cooping’ before reading this article, but as I read the theory, I had a better perception and a possible motive for Mr. Poe’s money missing and his change of clothing. However, I do feel that If Mr. Poe had any underlying medical conditions, it might be possible that both the “Disease and Cooping Theory” had some truth to it. The combination of the two theories could have played a role in his death.

I found that Poe had many existing medical problems so this lead to many speculation that he had tuberculosis, epilepsy, diabetes, and some sort of brain disease. As it states in web page "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe," "Karlen theorizes that Poe may have suffered from a rare enzyme disorder. He believes that combination of alcohol dehydrogenase deficiency syndrome and brain disease explain Poe's problems with alcohol, his fits of madness' and his sudden death." This made Poe's death very popular as many theories arose and speculation as well.

In some of his letters mentioned in the website we see how even wrote about not feeling well. Around the time of his death, Doctors had limited technology and resources to properly diagnose him with a condition. With the lack of evidence to support he had rabies, He could have still very well had some sort of neurological disorder. When he became intoxicated, it could have possibly made his unknown
condition worse and thus caused him to become hysterical and have a high fever.

The speculation surrounding Edgar Allan Poe's death has cause for a plethora of theories to arise about the cause. Although there seems to be an air of validity to some, the theory with the most supporting evidence is the "Disease and other Medical Conditions" theory outlined by "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe" article, published by the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore. The accounts of Mr. Poe's health conditions given by a nurse, Mrs. Shrew, then confirmed by Dr. Valentine Mott, provide evidence supporting he had "brain lesions," which is a stroke. A telling sign of a stroke is for one side to droop down, which is noted in the "twist to the poet's face." While there is no concrete proof to Mr. Poe's actual cause of death, he lived in an era where medical diagnosis and treatment weren't too common, which could explain why more evidence of his medical death isn't available.

For me, the one that makes the most sense of the three mentioned in "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe" is "The Cooping Theory", however, "Disease and Other Medical Problems" also makes a lot of sense. I believe that with the health problems said that the poet was suffering, it seems to make sense that he was physically abused the day he was found, and that his delicate state of health could not withstand so much mistreatment.

According to "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe," it states that, “A modern medical man who saw a photograph of Poe told my friend Robert Hunter Paterson that a twist in the poet’s face suggested to him a brain lesion. . .” (Mabbott, Poems, 1969, p. 562, n. 12). This quote intrigued me the most because if people had seen him and the way he looked back in that time why wouldn't they think that he had some sort of medical problem? The theory states that it might have been possible that Poe had suffered from some early incident which had later implications for his health. Out of all the theories of his death I think that the disease and other medical problems death is more persuasive because people and doctors claim that they had seen him and how he physically looked like at that time.

Edgar Allen Poe's death is very mysterious and perplexing to a lot of people because it was unexpected and quite sad that he was just found out on the street without a sure cause of death. The one theory that does fascinate me is the disease and other medical problems because it would make the most sense with all the evidence that has been brought up supporting it. Poe wrote a letter stating how ill he's felt, "“I have been so ill — have had the cholera, or spasms quite as bad, and can now hardly hold the pen . . .” (Ostrom, Letters, p. 452) Which is why it makes the most sense, although I do feel like the alcohol theory has some validity and It could be paired with the disease and medical condition theory as being the reasons for his death.

Edgar Allen Poe suffered a tragic death, considering no one actually knows what his cause of death was. The web page "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allen Poe" acknowledges all the theories that have been made about the tragedy of Poe's death. Although all of them seem logical, the "Disease and other Medical Problems" theory stood out to me the most. Not only have doctors concluded that Poe had brain lesion and other health conditions due to his appearance, the poet's writing prove's that he was not feeling well.

The mysterious death of Edgar Allan Poe
As I read all the theories concerning Edgars Poe’s death the one that felt more realistic would be “disease and other medical problems”. There was evidence that Edgar Poe had suffered from brain fever and also had brain lesions. There were some letters sent to Ms. Clemm that stated “ I have been so ill” “ and now hardly able to hold the pen”. Due to this it made me come to the conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe has died from a disease. Also if we add the fact that he would drink alcohol this could cause his medical conditions to worsen. With all this said I believe many factors had to contribute to his death but disease could be the main reason.

I have always enjoyed reading Edgar Allan Poe's works but reading about his death is something new for me. So while going through the several death theories from "The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe", I found the "Disease and Other Medical Problems" to be the one that sticks out most to me. This theory intrigues me the most because Poe himself even admits that he had not been feeling good. In this section, you will find that Poe writes in his letters to Maria Clemm, "I have been so ill, have had the cholera, spasms quite as bad, and can now hardly hold the pen...I'm so ill while i write...".

After reading over the possible theories of Poe’s death, most, if not all, have a refutation attached to it. I personally feel the one with the weakest counter argument, and the most interesting, would be the “cooping theory.” The fact that the action itself was illegal makes it more likely to be true, due to the fact no one would actually admit to being a part of a gang that “[kidnapped] innocent bystanders” for votes. Even if we wanted to believe the alcohol theory, it still ties into the fact that these gangs forcefully supplied their victims with alcohol. In addition, an eyewitness mentioned he was apparently “cruelly beaten.” Poe was also seen wearing different clothing, which was common practice for cooping. His current medical problems, the alcohol, as well as the different clothing can all be tied in with this theory alone. The sad actuality, with Poe’s already hard life, was that his luck just so happened to put him in the exact spot of the election, where the cooping is most likely to happen.

I've only heard of Edgar Allen Poe, because my brother was a fan of his work. I tried to follow, but it didn't attract me. Reading the theories of his death however, fascinate me. I believe that he had some sort of medical problem. Either a tumor in the brain, which may result in him acting different, and unable to write as he mentions to Maria Clemms in his letter ". . .and can now hardly hold a pen. . ." Although it isn't mentioned as a tumor the article mentions from Dr. Valentine Mott, . . ."that Poe had some sort of lesions on the brain and suffered from brain fever (The Poe Log, p.694). The brain has many nerves that controls how we act, speak, etc. Without proper equipment to properly examine Mr. Poe, there's no way to know for sure exactly what underlying condition he may have had.

It is hard to say what I think killed Edgar Allen Poe. After looking up what cooping was, I was sure that that was how he died but then I remember him living alone so I don't know who would do that to him. My second guess is that someone poisoned him at the bar but then another question came up "Who was after him and did he do anybody wrong that would make them poison him?" Ultimately, I think that it makes more sense that he died from alcohol poisoning.

This is the first time I've read about Edgar Allan Poe, very interesting reading about all his death theories and how they try to connect everything. The most realistic theory for me is "Disease and other medical problems" The records that exist about his past lesions and illnesses proves that is nothing else than that. Also the way he wrote on how he was feeling. Although none of the doctors who saw him knew exactly the diagnosis of Poe, in his writings proves that it is most likely he died for medical problems.

I've never really dived into the life of Edgar Allen Poe, I just knew he wrote dark and macabre poetry. Edgar Allen Poe's death was such a mysterious tragedy. After I read all the theories concerning Poe's death, the two that stood out to me were, "Disease and other medical problems," and ,"Cooping Theory." Poe had written a letter saying, "I have been so ill..." doctors even had stated that he had lesions in his and other medical conditions. I believe this his health has a sort of connection to the "Cooping Theory." The day he was found dead, he had a change of clothes. This connects to cooping because political candidates would hire gangs to abuse victims with alcohol and would usually make them change clothes to get them to comply. Also, considering Poe's current health, he was already in a weak, fragile state, most likely not be able to handle such abuse and violence, causing his death.

After reading the many theories about Edgar Allen Poe’s death, the one that intrigued me the most was the Cooping Theory. This theory doesn’t seem very credible because there are many were many flaws in the story such as this quote that states, “A possible flaw in the theory is that Poe was reasonably well-known in Baltimore and likely to be recognized.” If Poe was involved with cooping in Baltimore he most likely would have been recognized and word would have spread, thus solidifying evidence. However, since there’s no proof or evidence this idea seems false.

This theory is more believable because even Poe himself said he was feeling ill in his letters to Maria Clemin. This theory is even more credible since a doctor said he suffered heart disease even though Poe denied it. There was also a medical man that saw a picture of Poe and said he had a brain lesion.

I think the most credible story is that of "Illness and other Medical Problems." it is that it has more coherence compared to the others, because there are the records of Dr. John W. diagnosing Poe as suffering from heart disease, in addition to Mrs. Shew's statement that he saw a scar near the heart.
The other stories sound like urban myths that were created by speculation of people trying to understand why he had died, it is very likely that he suffered a nervous disorder after having consumed an excessive amount of alcohol.

The first time I learned about Edgar Allan Poe my class learned about his broken heart theory. Personally seeing as how today there is now such a thing as broken heart syndrome I am convinced that could be one of the leading factors into his death. Other than that I believe what also added to that is that medical examiners and the nurse who took care of him found lesions in the brain. Even in his journal or writings he says "I feel so ill" to the point where he could barely hold his own pen. It is very likely that with the symptoms that he was showing it must have been a brain or heart disorder/disease that was the cause of his death.

He engaged in drinking to cope with his issues and had alleged issues with his liver. With that being said it is seems pretty reasonable that his death could've been caused by his consistent abuse of alcohol. Not to mention that alcohol could've been a contributing factor to his underlying health issues.

After I read the page on Edgar Allan Poe's death, I began to think about how people have conditions that make them unable to process alcohol in their system. I would say I believe in the medical/disease theory based on that. In the medical theory, it states that he could have had alcohol dehydrogenase deficiency, or alcohol intolerance. Consuming alcohol with this condition can lead to liver failure and, without proper treatment, death.
