As a youth organizer for the NAACP, Hampton was able to assemble a youth group of 500 members from a community of about 27,000 people. He worked with the 500 to fight for the improvement of education resources and recreational facilities for Maywood's (a Chicago suburb Hampton grew up in) impoverished black communities. While being a member of the NAACP, Hampton desired to accomplish social change with community organizing and peaceful activism.
