WW1: The Paris peace conference was established in January, 18, 1919 in hopes that a treaty would begin to punish Germany. the Treaty was dominated by a group known as the big four. This group consisted of Woodrow Wilson representing the U.S.A, Georges Clemenceau of France, David Lloyd George of Great Britain, and Vittorio Orlando of Italy. The British and French did not agree with Woodrow Wilson's idea of peace this later resulted in argument between the three countries. The Treaty between Germany and the allied powers was signed on June 28, 1919 their goal would be to keep peace among the nations. This resulted in a failure due to the fact that most nations were losing land and the Treaty didn't do much to create lasting peace.
WW2: In 1945 the united states came together with the soviet union with 48 other countries forming the united nations. This was formed to protect its members from aggression. The U.S had a program called the Marshall plan to aid the European countries. The program provided food, machinery, and materials to rebuild the western Europe.

Militarism~ Is the belief or hope that the government or people that a country could maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it to defend or fight for its self. An example of pre-war militarism in WWI was the built up the tension and fear among the Great Powers of Europe. Britain at the time was the largest empire in the world, and it also had the largest navy. All conflicts in Europe resulted in the building up of the nation's army and navy. By 1914 Europe was in a state of 'armed peace'. An example of pre-war militarism in WWII was after World War I ended, Germany had its military reduced significantly. However, when the Weimar Republic collapsed, and then when Germany faced major economic problems in the 1920s, Germany turned to a totalitarian form of government eventually led by Adolf Hitler. Hitler pledged to restore German pride, which he felt was disrespected in the Versailles Treaty.
Alliances~ A formal agreement between two or more nations or powers to cooperate and come to one another's defense.
Benefits:

Learn necessary skills and obtain certain capabilities from your strategic partner

Reduce costs and risks by distributing them across the members of the alliance

You may join with your rivals to cooperate instead of compete

etc

       Downs:

Lack of control

Unequal benefits

merged reputations

liability

etc

Imperialism~ Is the practice of a larger country or government growing stronger by taking over poorer or weaker countries that have important resources.
Ex. WWI:

Imperialism had a side effect that import explains why the 'Great War' became a world war. European countries had been taking over colonies throughout the world since the fifteenth century. Britain and France, and Germany and France had almost gone to war over clashes in North Africa. Italy resented France because they prevented the setting up of Italian colonies, and the British and Russians clashed over who should have control in Persia (modern Iran), but were both worried that Germany would take land in the Middle East. As each European country gained colonies, those colonies became committed to helping the 'motherland' in the event of a war.

  Ex: WWII:

Hitler convinced the German people that the only way to international respect and power was to create a greater Germany, which he achieved by annexing Austria and Czechoslovakia. He then invaded Poland and the Low Countries.

Nationalism~ Is the unique cultural identity of a people based on common language, religion and national symbols.
Ex: WWI

French wanted the return of Alsace and Lorraine from Germans (lost it in 1871)--wanted REVENGE

German pride in military growth and rapid industrialization

Pan-Slavism in East Eu. (Austro-Hung. on last leg)

Serbian desire for own Slavic state, Serbs fought for own nation

Ex WWII:

Hitler and Mussolini believed in nationalism.

It was a major motivation behind many individuals who joined the Nazi Party.

Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi Party, used his profound oratory skills to manipulate the German people into following his regime's propaganda.
