For this week the stimulus we were given was an article about a refugee family who were leaving their country as a result of war zones. Our group made the decision to take inspiration from bands like Green Day and System of a Down by writing a protest song about war in response to the stimulus.

We weren't given anything to improve on, but I think that even though we worked well without them, some sort of vocals would have benefited the song and the idea we had further. Even more so, lyrics could have helped it to be more representative of a protest song if we had lyrics based around the details of the article.

For my own strengths, I think that I worked extremely well with the guitar and drums and we kept in time and followed each other in dynamics very closely. As a weakness, it would have worked well for me to have a solo on the bass as the guitar and drums also had one. If we had more time, I would have developed the song to have even a short part of solo bass so all the instruments were involved in having one.

Originally, our group was supposed to have drums, bass guitar, electric guitar, as well as two rappers. However neither of the rappers had shown up that day, so we had to develop our piece into an instrumental that would still accurately portray our take on the stimulus. In order to further develop the piece, we added in a solo on the electric guitar and used the drums and bass to work together on on the beat of the song.

The performance

Our song as performed opened with the guitar playing the riff for four bars. Then, the bass guitar comes in following the root notes of the riff for four bars, and finally the drums come in so that all the instruments are playing for the verses. There is then a change of chords that repeats in order to build up into the guitar’s solo. This is played for eight bars, and then leads back into the main riff for another four bars. Immediately after, the drum solo begins and plays for eight bars, also lifting the dynamics of the song. The main riff plays again, and then all the instruments move into a bridge section that plays for eight bars. In the first section of the bridge, we all play at a slower tempo and let our instruments ring out at a lower dynamic. This helps to establish a change in the structure of the song. Then in the second part of the bridge, the instruments play a crescendo which builds up into cymbal crashes over another change in chords. Finally, we end on a fast, heavy outburst of all the instruments increasing in tempo and then ending on the drums being hit once.

Before performing, we refer to our piece as starting out sad to suit the idea of war, and that it picks up to become more distressing nearer the end of the song. In my opinion this suited the stimulus well as it was representative of a protest song in anger of the refugee situation. I think this was captured through the use of the guitars and drums playing heavily and the darker, distressing tone this gave despite having no lyrics. Our class, after witnessing our performance, told us that the guitar solo and drum solo worked very well. I would agree as I think this helped to bring our point across without needing vocals or lyrics, and helped to extend the structure of the song. From my point of view, all the instruments played a key role in working together to create the atmosphere we wanted, which made the song successful in regard to our stimulus.

All in all, I think we gave a suitable response to the given stimulus. This is due to the emotions shown through the music without using vocals, as well as the tone and dynamics of the song. I believe it doesn't need much more development.
