The first Gen: Vacuum Tubes (1940–1956)

The first computer systems used vacuum tubes for their circuits and also magnetic drums for their main memory. They were very expensive to operate and not all governments had access to them. The maximum storage level of these computers was about 20,000. It was in this same generation that the Von Neumann architecture was introduced, which shows the design architecture of an electronic digital computer.

Secon Gen: Transistors (1956-1963)

The transistor was invented at Bell Laboratories in 1947, but did not come into use until the 1950s. Magnetic disks, magnetic tape and magnetic core memory also came into use in this generation. By the 1950s, the transistor was far superior to vacuum tubes, and computers were cheaper, faster, smaller and more energy-efficient.

Third Gen: Integrated Circuits (1964–1971)

In the third generation of computers, computers began to use Integrated Circuits (ICs) instead of transistors (The IC was invented by Jack Kilby on September 12, 1958, when the first integrated circuit, somewhat rudimentary in appearance but fully operational, was introduced). This development made computers smaller, more reliable and efficient. An integrated circuit has many transistors, resistors and capacitors, along with associated circuitry.

The microprocessor was a fourth-generation computer game changer, with thousands of integrated circuits on a single silicon chip. The Intel 4004 chip, developed in 1971, integrated all computer components, from the central processing unit and memory to input and output controls, on a single chip. In 1981, IBM created the first personal computer (PC) for home use, and in 1984 Apple created the Macintosh (Mac).

This is also the first generation so far to pack a gigantic proportion of storage into a compact and portable device.

Over time, computers have changed and, with them, people. New technologies sooner or later improve and change aspects of our lives. In this timeline we saw the evolution of computers, which, like a person, change and evolve over time. Computers were, are and will be one of the best inventions in history.
