I chose scenario 1 - It is always important to keep school personnel (guidance, social workers, mental health counselors, etc...) informed about situations concerning students. Especially those that warns addressing! In fact, it is our duty as classroom teachers to keep the child's best interest at heart. However, not doing anything causes us to be negligent in our official duty as professional teachers.

I would notify school personnel immediately (counselor, social worker, mental health worker, etc.) and speak with the student privately about why they are feeling this way. I would be gentle and calm, and reassuring. I would treat them as I would my own child and hope that they would open up to me, and if not I would discuss options of trustworthy people I would help them find to open up to. I would take on an active role in seeking help for this student. I would continually check on their progress once help was being administered. Battles like this are not quickly won, it takes time and I would commit to supporting this student from beginning to a (hopeful) resolution/solution. - S.H.

In either situation I would contact a support staff member verbally and in writing right away. As a measure of caution, I would contact more than one through written communication for back support and accountability documenation. During the verbal conversation I would have an idea of how to proceed with the situation... they would identify what my responsibility was at that point in the situation. I would ask for a follow up plan before implementing anything new/different with the student. There has to be some form of clarity.... What if I not knowingly put a plan in place that did not work for the student or was not in the best interest of the students. Communication would be my plan moving for with the student!
D.

I would first do a "temperature check" with the student. Find some time to talk privately and see if you can find out what is going on. It could be, that the student is babysitting younger siblings for a parent whose work schedule or family income dynamic has changed. Let the student know that you are concerned and would like to help if you can. Depending upon the response, I can then refer other staff to help. Sometimes, it just takes a listening ear and a little extra time to make a big difference. JL

I would try and establish what may be bothering the student and why there is a change in his behavior.

I would ask the students to step outside to see what was going on that maybe we could talk about it. If the student refused I would call someone who could help that students removing the student from the room. This would at least take the attention off of them. I would not allow the student to sit and I do nothing because this would send the wrong message to the other students that it is okay to act like that because the teacher is not going to do anything. So I would have the student removed in a manner that would not make that student feel worse but that I was concerned and wanted to help.
