The direct antecedent of the Palacio de Oriente was the Real Alcázar, a fortress built on the same site where the Baroque construction stands today. Its structure was the subject of several reforms, especially the façade, as King Henry III of Castile made it one of his most frequented residences, after which the enclosure obtained the adjective "royal". His son Juan II built the Royal Chapel and several rooms. However, during the War of the Castilian Succession (1476) the troops of Juana la Beltraneja were besieged in the fortress, which caused some damage to the old castle.
