I believe we made our students reconsider the images of refugees we get from the media, the stereotypes and prejudices connected to them. The only problem during the project was having technical troubles (ok, and, to be honest, motivating the students to do extra work at the end of the school year) with the videoconference but we've learned a lot from that too. Next time, the teachers will have their own videoconference before we include the students.
In the future, I will try to start projects at the beginning of the school year in order to have more time to discuss the topics with my students and to finish the tasks with less time pressure.

I am really happy and honoured that you invited me to join your project as an observer. I work for Amnesty International – an international human rights organisation, in the field of human rights education, meaning that I deliver workshops in schools, prepare educational materials etc. and I love to keep learning myself, as well.


Congratulations (and thank you) to Vika and Cordula for the project, I believe it was very educative – for me as well!


I/We believe in the power of participatory and interactive learning, so it's great that you have used different audio-visual materials. From the perspective of human rights education, it is very valuable that you have talked about the reasons that make people leave their homes, and that you have used the film, photos and question-based discussion to transform nameless and faceless sculptures into persons with names, faces, history and hopes for the future – it is important to see real people behind the statistics. Media representations play a crucial role in public opinion building therefore it is important that you have discussed this as well.  From the human rights education point of view it is not enough to only recognise the problems, but to address them as well. Writing happy endings is a nice example of it, as it makes the participants think about their (meaning their own as well as immigrants’ and everyone’s) goals and hopes for the future and can therefore more easily identify with the immigrants and their situations.


To make a project like this even more successful, I would advise you to try to include an activity where the participants have a first-hand experience (for instance a role play, or an activity where they have to do something and think about it from the immigrants’ perspective), which would make them even more sympathetic. I also believe that a nice follow-up of the project would be to think about what they/we can do to help the immigrants reach their happy endings.

It is true that our timing might not have been the best (especially as my students had many other on-going projects, just before their summer vacation) but for a first project I am very satisfied with what we achieved together!
It was a great pleasure for me to work with Vika and I think that we complemented each other well! We did have a couple of technical problems (i.e. the videoconference ...) but we won't have them again (learning by doing)! ;-)
My students were mostly motivated and interested and developped strategies to overcome initial inhibitions in regard to the written expression and reading comprehension!!!
My only real regret is the lack of time at the end of the school year as I would have liked to push further on the content of the project before publishing the e-books: The subject of "immigrants" in an English language class! I am still very happy about the outcome though and credit goes to Vika for the publication of the e-books!
