While gathering items from my backyard space, I though about how it was a relaxing yet adventurous space for myself and my family. A space where my 3 year old daughter can explore, have fun, imagine and be creative.
My assemblage has different sections, which is similar to my backyard. The left hand side of the page reflects sustainability and the current cost of living. It's edible and contains items we use regularly like lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, a variety of herbs and the leaves from lemon, lime and guava trees. The right side also reflects sustainability as we have grown everything from cuttings and can continue to take cuttings to grow more plants in the future. They're low maintenance and are easy on the eye.
The Purple leaves positioned in the centre of the page represent the hands of a clock. This reflects the time we have put into our space and the time we make to spend in our space, especially when life gets busy and difficult.
This activity really surprised me as I thought about how a simple page of foliage could represent so many things and tell so many stories. Engaging in the task and reading the contributions of others has made me start to consider the endless ways that various forms of art could be integrated across the curriculum to enhance learning and support creativity, communication and diversity.

During this week’s tutorial we focussed on the topic of sustainability and viewed and discussed artwork that incorporated recycled items. We learnt about visual arts elements such as shape, texture, contrast and pattern and how visual arts can communicate HASS concepts. Following this we were challenged to make a piece of art from recycled items that communicated the message of sustainability and that could also be used in a stop motion media arts activity. Considering sustainability and my love for the ocean, I decided to make a turtle. I gathered some recyclables and thought about the numerous ways I could create my turtle and the message that I wanted my art to communicate. Pictured is my outcome. It is made entirely from recycled items and is completely glue, sticky tape and staple free. I can also open the turtle’s strawberry punnet stomach to add and remove water pollution like plastic bags and straws. Lastly, I added some contrasting circles to break up the blank space and add a sense of movement. Reflecting on the task, I can see how primary students would need appropriate time to imagine, plan and create when doing similar tasks. This time would help enable students to create art that communicates their own ideas, feelings and perspectives.

Sustainability Through Stop Motion

What

This week we learnt about media arts, its key concepts, elements and codes. The focus remained on sustainability and we were tasked to create a ‘stop motion’ that communicated sustainability. This was to be done using the sustainable visual arts piece that we created last week, mine was a turtle made from household recyclables.

So What

After downloading the stop motion app, I tried to create my stop motion on my study desk. However, my desk top lacked SPACE, which affected the COMPOSITION of how the photos could be captured and there was poor LIGHTING due to shadows. These are all elements of media arts and saw me moving to the floor. My stop communicates the importance of sustainability and the effects of pollution. My turtle firstly eats a straw, then a pen lid, followed by a plastic bag; common items that end up in waterways and the ocean. Lastly, the contents of the turtle’s stomach is revealed while zooming in.

Now What

After reflecting on how we have integrated visual arts with media arts to successfully communicate a HASS concept, I now need to consider and learn different and authentic ways to effectively integrate arts learning. The task also reaffirmed that using ICTs was a weak point and concern of mine. Becoming more proficient with ICTs will help and enable me to explore forms of media art and build my confidence while using ICTs within teaching and learning experiences. If I had more time, adding other media arts elements and codes such as music, sound effects and written text would help communicate the importance of sustainability.

Integrating Visual Art and Music

Within this week's tutorial we started with a consolidation of arts integration definitions, examples and principles. We then moved onto the focus of the week, which was integrating visual art and music with a theme of emotions. We started off by reviewing visual art elements like line, colour shape ect before doing an activity that saw us communicating emotions through visual art. We started with familiar concepts such as drawing an emotion on a face, then moved onto more abstract representations of emotions while drawing a flower, the weather, a line and a shape. We then did a similar activity that focused on music. We learnt about elements of music such as timbre, pitch, rhythm dynamics etc, then listened to a range of music and discussed the feelings and emotions it conveyed.

Lastly, we integrated visual art and music by listening to a piece of instrumental music and drawing an abstract artwork using visual art elements to communicate elements of music. We found out after the activity that the music represented a turtle. I was a bit lost with the task and responded by drawing a continuous line that reflected the music. Afterwards, I added colour....blue to represent smooth sound and red to represent staccato. I didn't use shape at the time, but my finished art is full of shapes as a result of my continuous line. I call my art piece 'The Turtles Treasure Map'.

I now have a much better understanding of how art forms, whether on their own or integrated with another, can be a creative and inclusive means of interpretation and communication. This will be extremely useful within the classroom when catering to student diversity.

Exploring Soundscapes

What?
In this weeks tutorial we came up with sounds that could represent shapes/images, instruments that could reflect different types of lines and matched various images with their most likely instrument. We were then tasked with making a digital soundscape that conveyed emotions to a chosen artwork using elements of timbre, pitch and texture. I chose Wandjina in the Wunnumurra Gorge artwork.

So What?
This task definitely didn't cater to my strengths. Without knowing the background to the artwork, I personally found it quite eerie. Almost as if they were lost Indigenous souls entombed in the rock and looking to be set free. I used an eerie backing sound that ranged from a higher pitch to a lower pitch. This was also an example of timbre. I then added a repetitive dull thud as if someone was banging on the wall and also a repetitive sharp metallic sound to emulate a tool being used. Lastly, I added some recorded whispered vocals that say "help me get out of here". As a whole the layers clash and create an eerie and uncomfortable texture. This was a reflection of the emotions that I felt when viewing the artwork.

No What?
I had to develop new skills to complete this task and did find it challenging. I think this form of expression, interpretation and communication could create endless opportunities to creatively explore topics. However, I will have to considerably expand my knowledge and skills in this area to effectively integrate it within learning experiences.

Hi My name is Aaron, I'm a mature age student who is currently adventuring through my third year of UNI. I have a beautiful 3 year old daughter and absolutely love watching her experience and explore different forms of art. As a kid I loved to draw and as an adult, while I consider myself creative and able to 'think outside the box', I don't consider myself 'Artsy'.

I'm looking forward to exploring different forms of art through EPA3200 and learning how to integrate arts within learning to help students communicate and express feelings, ideas and understandings.

In this week's tutorial we revised the 3 dimensions of the Australian Curriculum and then focussed on the GC of 'Critical and Creative Thinking'. This saw us collaboratively creating a Venn Diagram regarding the individual and shared characteristics of each form of thinking regarding the arts.

We then looked at integrating Science with Dance. As an introductory activity, in pairs (breakout rooms) we created 'Crazy Creatures', listing their defining features and how they moved. This activity then transitioned into doing something similar for a native Australian Bird. My group chose the emu. We had to research its physical characteristics, its behaviour and how it moved (the science stuff). Then we had to creatively consider how we could use elements of dance to communicate these findings through movement.

Collaboration within this task was extremely useful to bounce ideas around and share current knowledge and understanding. However, when it came to dancing, most students avoided this as if it was an open bottle of off milk. This highlighted some of the obstacles we may face within the classroom when teaching the arts.
