Allende publicly said that he was a democratic leader and represented a more moderate faction of  the socialist party, but was supported by the communist party who favored a more cautious and gradual approach compared to a democracy. Allende came into power when he received the 1973 election from Hector Campora. Salvador Allende died by self-inflicted gunshot wounds during a coup d'état led by Augusto Pinochet. Pinochet came to power when a coup d'état backed by the United States overthrew the socialist government and Salvador Allende.
