What I learned

Today I learned about the different forms of assessment, we talked about the different types for example:
Assessment for learning (Formative)
Assessment of Learning (Summative)
I learned that summative assessment is usually performed at the end of a unit and takes the form of a test assessing the learning. The most common examples of this type of assessment is the Junior Cert and the Leaving Cert.
Formative assessment tests ongoing learning. It is more casual and "off the cuff" examples are in class quizzes, questioning etc.

I always think that in this lecture the casual talk works the best. We are always so interested to here the real life stories form our lecturer. It helps us it gauge what school is actually going to be like when we go out on placement.
Other than this I think the graphic learning tools worked really well, they seem very useful and easy to implement to make your lesson more effective.

New Ideas

We were bombarded with new ideas throughout this lesson. We looked a numerous videos mainly songs by Mr. Par like the Photosynthesis song. These were great and I can imagine really effective implementation of these into my class in the future.
Before today's lecture I always thought open book tests were a bit silly but after talking through the thoughts behind them today O believe they could be a really effective tool to gauge students comprehension because of the harder questions but deeper interpretation and understanding.
Another fantastic idea from today's class was the "CARE team" maybe they are already implemented in many schools but it was the first time I heard of it and I think every school should have one in order to protect student welfare.

At the end of the lecture I was very curious about the "CARE Team". I thought it was a fantastic idea but wondered how are you suppose to know everything that is going on in a students life?
What is the best way to formatively assess students without hurting their feelings?
What are the best way to assess students on a day to day basis?
How do the students feel after the assessment?

I will definitely be implementing the graphic learning into my lessons . We were shown many different templates that seem very useful for different topics. My favorite one was "The Steps- I thought this was very well laid out and I believe it would be a great learning tool for experiments etc. Another one I thought was quite useful was "The Funnel" I find this a good way to kick start students learning without feeling they are doing anything wrong, it stimulates students thinking and allows for steady development.
