Running Fox Beads is a Toronto based Artist. Her father is Dene from Patuanak in Northern Saskatchewan and her Mother is a Fourth Generation Canadian from Vancouver Island. "I am part of the Residential School legacy, growing up with a shuffled but not disconnected understanding of who I am. At the age of 15 I visited my reserve for the first time. Off a dirt-road, in an English River First Nation rez home, my auntie expected me to help cut the meat off a moose my uncle had hunted. Being from downtown Toronto, the expectation was a culture shock and I refused. Resisting my urban teenaged reaction, my auntie sat me down and taught me to bead. There, I completed my first piece of beadwork using one of my Setsuné’s designs. The act was instantly healing, and a bond formed. This narrative resonates with many young Indigenous people and beyond; when colonization has fractured cultural connections for many.

In 2015, I invested in my bead practice full-time when my first son was born. Since I identify as a mother first, practicing my art is an act of survival, sustenance, and connection in the same way it is to carve a moose and teach one's niece to bead their Setsuné’s designs. "

My little brother, who is Metis, Russ Sheppard, was a teacher in Kugluktuk, Nunavut and started a Lacrosse program to give the young people something to do in the community. The suicide rate was one of the highest in North America and he wanted something to give his students that would hopefully give them something to work towards and to feel a sense of pride. The movie, "The Grizzlies" was made about the program that was started and how it influenced the children of Kugluktuk and how they became influencers in their own community and so many now work helping their community.

when I was in grade school my Cree teacher played this movie for us and it was life changing for me, it showed me the importance of keeping our language, culture, and stories alive. What really hit close to home was seeing the bond and love that the Grandfather and grandson had. My own grandfather was the one who taught me what it means to be a man and a proud indigenous person.
