In this photo, I am sitting in one of my favorite places on the planet, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. It’s an outdoor mosaic garden that took one artist over 14 years to craft, and it’s simply one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. I am an eternally curious person. If I don’t know something, I do the research to figure it out. Then I do more research, and more, and more. All of my vacations have to include a trip to the zoo, a local museum, and time to explore the nature surrounding the place. That’s also why I spend a lot of my time listening to podcasts and tending to my ever growing patio garden. I love surrounding myself with things that bloom and grow, and that’s why I love teaching so much. Watching my students discover some new genre or writing skill they didn’t know they had is one of my greatest joys. In 2017, I was selected to travel to Japan as part of a program that allowed a small number of educators from NJ, NY, and CT to visit schools in rural, urban and suburban areas of Japan. During our two-week visit, we compared Japanese and American school programs, best practices and exchanged school spirit items. I remember how excited the students were to receive Panther Paw magnets and pencils (sound familiar?). We also stayed with Japanese families in order to learn more about Japanese culture. I wore a kimono and participated in a tea ceremony. My experience in Japan taught me the importance of showing respect to yourself, others, and the environment.
