Peter the Great help Russia imported Western technology,

improved education, simplified the Russian alphabet, and set up academies for the study of mathematics, science, and engineering, to pay for. But Peter The Great also abused his power when he beheaded five of the guardsmen himself out of the thousands that were executed for treason. Peter had no favourites when it came to punishment. Even his son and heir was imprisoned and tortured.
