Module 3-Management Functions

Module 3 deepened my understanding of the four core management functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. As someone who manages seven offices across Florida, these functions are part of my daily reality. Strategic planning is essential when rolling out new client service initiatives or adapting to regulatory changes. I often create quarterly action plans for each office, aligning them with corporate goals while tailoring them to regional client demographics.

Organizing is another key area, especially when coordinating staffing, training, and compliance across multiple locations. I’ve recently restructured our onboarding process to ensure consistency while allowing flexibility for office-specific needs. This module reminded me how departmentalization, grouping tasks by function, can streamline operations and reduce redundancy (Florida State College at Jacksonville, 2021).

Leading is where I see the most impact. I strive to practice transformational leadership, motivating my teams to embrace innovation and client-first thinking. For example, when we introduced a new digital claims platform, I led with empathy and clarity, helping staff navigate the change with confidence. Lastly, controlling mechanisms like performance dashboards and client satisfaction surveys help me monitor progress and make data-driven adjustments.

Three key terms I’ve applied:

Strategic Planning: Defining long-term goals and allocating resources to achieve them.

Span of Control: Managing the number of employees I can effectively supervise across offices.

Chain of Command: Clarifying reporting relationships to ensure accountability and reduce confusion.

This module reinforced that effective management isn’t just about oversight, it’s about empowering people, aligning systems, and adapting with purpose.

This week’s case study challenged me to look beyond surface-level policies and dig into the soul of three organizations. I chose Microsoft, Airbnb, and Gillette—each representing a different industry, yet all striving to make a social impact.

What struck me most was how Airbnb’s #WeAccept campaign turned a Super Bowl ad into a global call for inclusion. It wasn’t just marketing—it was a movement. The campaign generated over 33,000 tweets in real time and invited people to open their homes to displaced individuals. That’s not just CSR; that’s community-building.

This week’s module reminded me that even the most passionate vision can flounder without a clear roadmap. The story of Sun City Boards hit close to home—not because I sell surfboards, but because I understand what it means to juggle multiple priorities and risk losing focus. Tom Wilson’s journey was a cautionary tale about what happens when a business expands without strategic direction. It made me reflect on how I manage my own goals, both personally and professionally.

The most powerful takeaway was the importance of aligning every action with a well-defined mission and vision. Without those anchors, even the best intentions can drift. I appreciated how the module broke down the planning process into actionable steps—from defining objectives to tracking progress with SMART goals. It gave me a framework I can apply not only in business but also in my household and academic life.

This module felt like stepping into the architect’s seat—designing not just a business, but the very bones that hold it together. The case study on Sun City Boards challenged me to think beyond operations and into the realm of structure, hierarchy, and scalability. Tom Wilson’s entrepreneurial spirit is admirable, but without a clear organizational framework, his vision risks collapsing under its own weight.

I chose the functional organizational structure for Sun City’s future. It’s clean, efficient, and aligns perfectly with their growth goals. By grouping roles into core functions—Design, Manufacturing, Sales, Finance, and Customer Service—we create clarity, accountability, and room for specialization. This structure also supports unity of command, ensuring each employee reports to one supervisor, which reduces confusion and boosts performance.
