Surfing in New Zealand

New Zealand has 15,000 kilometers of coastline, so the opportunities to surf are plentiful. New Zealand offers two main coasts, East and West, for surfers to choose between. The most prominent west coast surfing destination is Raglan, but Muriwai and Piha have black sand beaches along with wild waves. The west coat is more well known and has more consistent breaks, but the east coast can’t be discounted. On the east coast, Mount Maunganui and Taupo Bay offer swells from both the Pacific north and Antarctic south, which makes it a unique destination. The break aren’t as consistent, but when they’re good, they’re good.

The New Zealand Film Commission funds and supports New Zealand films and filmmakers. Their mission is to make and promote films from New Zealand in hopes that they will attract international production companies to distribute them. Their films all center around a unique aspect of New Zealand. “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” addresses the foster care system and highlights the natural beauty of New Zealand. “Deathgasm” shows the weird and campy side of kiwi films, telling the story of black metal rockers who rock so hard they summon evil forces down to their small suburb. The Film Commission works tirelessly to help amazing stories unfold and promote the films of New Zealand in an international landscape.

The Food of New Zealand

The traditional cuisine of New Zealand has European, Asian, and Polynesian influences. Pork, venison, and lamb make up the majority of meat consumed, but seafood is also very prominent in New Zealand cuisine. The food often has a prominent smoky flavor because of barbecuing. An important thing to know about how Kiwi’s approach food is that it’s approached with a relaxed and unaffected attitude. This is distinctive to the general atmosphere New Zealand fosters, which is meant to be laidback.

The Music of New Zealand

Music in New Zealand is pretty typical to modern music. It’s a blend of blues, jazz, country, and hip-hop, but all the genres are interpreted uniquely. Before New Zealand was colonized, Maori music largely consisted of chanting and instruments called taonga pūoro, which are made from hollowed out wood, ivory, and bone. Some popular artists to come out of New Zealand include Lorde, the pop artist, and Flight of the Conchords, who are a comedic duo.

Traditional Dance in New Zealand

The most prominent form of traditional dance in New Zealand is the haka. The haka originates from the Maori, who are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. The dance was first used on the battlefield to show a fierce display of pride, strength, and unity. Common elements found within haka dances are foot stamping, tongue flashing, body slapping, and loud chants. The chants are typically about family or tribe history. Although Maori tribes do not use the haka for war nowadays, it is performed at weddings, funerals, and special occasions to show reverence and the power of Maori tradition.

New Zealand did not have any prominent populations of land mammals before humans arrived. This led the natural populations of birds and reptiles to evolve into truly unique animals.
Kiwi birds are iconic to New Zealand. They are small, flightless nocturnal birds with typically brown plumage. They lay enormous eggs and will steal your food.
The kea is the only type of alpine parrot in the world. They are called “dinosaur birds” and have allegedly dismantled cars.
The waters around New Zealand provide a home to the world’s smallest dolphin, Hector’s dolphin. These dolphins can typically be found in waters around the southern island.
These are just a few species unique and native to New Zealand and the surrounding waters.
Fun fact: bats are referred to as “pekapeka”, and they are the only native land mammals to New Zealand.

New Zealand may not be a large country, but it is home to extremely diverse terrain. New Zealand has mountains, volcanoes, fjords, underground rivers, lakes, rock formations, and plenty of coastline. New Zealand is known for its vibrant greenery, which is often highlighted in aerial footage of the country. The diverse terrain makes New Zealand a popular destination with hikers and adventurers, because they can experience many diverse landscapes in a relatively small area of land.

Why I Chose New Zealand

I chose to do my moodboard on New Zealand because I became fascinated by the country through films I watched. The laidback attitude, reverence for nature, and easy access to coastline drew me to New Zealand. I also love the New Zealand Film Commission very much (even more than A24). It is a place that I would love to travel to because it is like small Australia, but also very unique in its own right. I also love Flight of the Concords, and they are from New Zealand. The closest I have come to New Zealand is Hawaii, which is not very close at all, so hopefully I am able to go one day.
