Andrew and Eric are homosexual, but Brenton's orientation was never stated. All of the students listed filed complaints to their assailants, and the most punishment they would get is expulsion, but for the most part the assailants would only be suspended up to a semester. The boys repeatedly stated how their cases were not taken seriously, and they felt that their problems were just pushed aside. Experts believe gay men are targeted more for assault due to the stigma around homosexuality and men being sexually assaulted. Fortunately all 3 of these students were able to seek counseling and help them through their trauma.

Andrew told author of the article Emily Kasse that a possibility as to why their case wasn't taken seriously was because some viewed the rape/assault as a punishment for being queer. These students were open about their sexuality, so some see people like Andrew or Eric were asking for it, or didn't even consider it assault because they like that stuff. The other glaring problem is that men aren't supposed to be victims, they don't talk about their problems and they man up. Because of that stigma, men are more likely not to report these crimes. 1 in 5 women are assaulted or raped according to certain studies, however the statistics for men aren't as precise. One study that asked 5,000 college students if they have ever been sexually assaulted, 1 in 25 answered yes.
