Movement

Whilst I spent a cold afternoon at a place that means so much to me, it helped me realise that I do not take a lot of time to allocate to myself. Sitting on top of the hill made me feel at ease, whilst I observed the natural environment in front of me grow beneath my eyes. It felt like I was breathing in original air, air that came from the bush land in front of me as I examined the wind create a swaying movement through its leaves and branches. As I sat there, I saw how spotless the earth was; there was not one single piece of unwanted waste there, perfect for our wildlife and the dogs running around in the perfectly cut green grass. There was a bridge near me, over the bridge was a main road and I could see the cars driving past, some driving quicker than others. I was wondering, why were people in a hurry? Or were some just driving slow? It was the little detail that made me question, do I drive too fast or too slow?

Then my attention was drawn to the soccer post on the ground, I was contemplating whether to go and pick it up but I knew it was triple the size of me. My thought kept floundering in my head how windy really was it or did someone brutally bully the posts until it could not stand. Some type of movement was made for this to happen and I really wanted to get to the bottom of it, but I couldn’t, it didn’t bother me though. I was still in a very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere where it felt like there was not a worry in a world, gosh I miss that feeling. I miss the feeling of being free like the birds flying from tree to tree just like a kid, running wild in the wind. I realised that I am still the kid, but just older and wiser and I could still offer this feeling of freedom and happiness to a childhood environment.

Sound

As I sat there, I noticed the quieter I became, the more I heard. I heard the birds singing to one another, the cars driving past, the rustling of the trees and most importantly, I could hear myself think. The feeling was incredible, hearing our scenic native animals speak to each other in the open environment we have access to anytime we want. During this pandemic, we really have to appreciate the small things in life such as nature, and use this as our sound. Like Dadirri, we have to be open to ‘Inner Deep Listening and Quiet Still Awareness’ so we are able to capture and focus on the small detail in our surroundings. Initially, I could not hear a door slam in my video, but after listening several times to my video you could hear a faint slam of someone closing their car door. When I think about cars, I think about the ‘vroom’ noise they make, some louder than others. You never think about a car door-shutting close. Putting the two types of sounds together you have a theme and you could place both sounds into one category. This links into Victor’s Ted Talk where he perceives ‘music as another form of language’. As a future educator, we are able to make connections with sounds and learn from it without realising. I have learnt that it is important to deeply listen and understand our surroundings as we can appreciate the moment we are in and gain focus.

Combination of Movement and Sound

Reflecting back has helped me see movement in another light. The view that I had in front of me was not just an area of green grass and some bushes; it was a place more than that… it was tranquility. When I listened closely, I could hear not only the birds chirping away, but whilst some flew past I could hear their wings expanding whilst they drifted through the strong wind, flying from one destination to another. I was curious to know what they get up too, at one point I thought on what they think when they see us. As the breeze got cooler, I could not help but see my hands lose its colour and stiffen up. It drew my attention to the movement in the circulation of my fingertips was thinning, that’s when I knew it was time to head on home. When I walked to towards my car, I was focusing on the noise my car made when you unlocked the doors and the variety of noises that this large object nearly everyone I know owns, could make. I took time to cogitate to myself on where I need to dedicate more time to observe and take note of the finer things to see the bigger outcome. This links into my teaching pedagogy, to not just hear the children and allow them be background noise, but to take time to listen to what they are saying and understand them with my all.
