Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature because it teaches us many lessons and important skills like connecting ideas to one another from two different texts. We study TTTC because it teaches us some really good writing strategies and it helps us connect some older themes to relevant topics today.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We are affected by texts because they teach us some very important lessons about life and issues around the world. We are impacted by TTTC because we got invested in the characters and how they were physically and mentally feeling through the story. There hardship and struggle really inspired me to push myself to the limits in everything I do and no matter what I know I will always get through the challenging times.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?

It meaning is kinda shown through all the items that the soldiers were carrying. Each and everyone carried something different and unique representing they all carried different burdens and struggles, but they were all bonded together like brothers and they got through all of those struggles together. It created a sort of attachment to the story and made it feel that much more real and truthful about the pain and struggles of war

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?

I think O'Brien makes the style more realistic and relatable to people how actually experience going through war. On top of this he describes the characters with lots of details this connects us to the book more. Once he does this the book means for and feels more realistic to read like us the reader are experiencing the life of a solider which gives it so much more meaning.

Both of these books talk about the importance of identity and how it is important to matin a sense of identity.

How does TTTC connect to our world today?
Well TTTC shows us the brutal and horrific effects that war can have on a person. We can see a connection between some of our vets today that fought in the Vietnam War. The trauma that they had to face is indescribable, so it's important that we hear them out. This will allow us to understand them better and find ways to help our vets adapt back into everyday life that may not be easy to be reacquainted with.

Readers, Writers, and Texts

How does the structure or style of a literary text affect meaning? Morrison's use of steam of consciousness is so effective in this book. It allows us to see what each and every character is thinking which helps progress and develop the story even further. It is such an intricate tecquinue and helps the reader gain a really good sense of all the different story lines blending together. Her shifts between certain characters allows the reader to see Sethe through everyones eyes and there thoughts which was an amazing tecquine.

Time and Space

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? It is very important to understand the historical background without it would 100 precent put Sethe in the wrong, but understanding the background allows the reader to understand why Sethe did what she did. It was the time of the fugitive slave act(slaves were getting hunted down) so Sethe didn't want her kids going back into slavery after they escaped so she was going too kill them all to protect them, but only could kill the baby. This actually happened with a women named Margaret Garner and was the basis for the story. Morrison truly wanted to show the haunting and everlasting effect of slavery.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

Time and Space
Choose 3 out of these 6 questions to answer and reflect on how it relates to our reading and understanding of Hughes' work.

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text?

How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own? We should use the older texts as learning opportunities. We need to approach these issues knowing that some of the problems are still going on now. If we grow and correct the mistakes of the past our current society will be much better off.

To what extent do literary texts offer insight into another culture? Literary texts show us what one culture was feeling or experiencing during a certain time. It allows us to see the pain and suffering, the ups and downs. It helps us connect to them and try to see their side of the story. Literary texts allow us to reminisce and try to fix our mistakes so cultures don't have to feel suppressed and unequal.

How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time?

How do literary texts reflect, represent or form a part of cultural practices?

How does language represent social distinctions and identities? Different languages represent the separation between two groups of people. Like black slang compared to proper English is shows the educational differences and opportunities that are given to that group of people. Why so many rappers are black it creates that identity that blacks have to be thugs or in gangs because they were not given the same treatment as white kids and that's the only way for them to survive or make money in a lot of cases because that is the typical "black" identity. We create different cultures/identities because one group feels separated from the other which creates hate and tension which can be seen in the culture and identity of a group

I think. it heavily. connects with Beloved when talking about this decision on if the brothers actions were ritchous or not. It is very Similar to Sethe's case and her decision for. killing the baby. Both of these flow great togheetser and explore what actions are ritchous and which ones are wrong.

How does Chronicle connect to our world today? This connects to our world today with problems like gender inequality. This book is all about how the brothers are defending the sisters honer it never once really focuses on what happened or how Angela feels. It's just about what the brothers did. I think that focuses by the author puts a sign up for the gender divided. he wants to bring this topic to our attention to demonstrate that women at times even. now in this. world can be seen as weak, but. this is simply just not true.

It connects very very well to TTTC in respect to aspect of trauma, identity, environment. All of these things make up both the similarities of the War we see in TTTC and the concentration camp of Auschwitz in Auschwitz and After. Both of these passages allow the audience to dive deep and connect to these traumatic experiences on a personal and almost realistic level. Both these books emirs us as the reader it helps us to understand why people may act or feel a certain way. Both are wonderful.

How does Auschwitz connect to our world today? It connects to our world today because it shows us a side of human nature that each and everyone has to fight to control. It is a scary part of what can happen when people are scared and willing to trust anything to be successful again. This is a very recent occurrence and we need to remember that this didn't happen long ago in the past things like this can still happen today. Wee need to take that into perspective and just be catious of our actions.

Intertextuality
How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
This is a valid piece of literary work because it is used to convey a real critical issue. It is not a childish use of pictures they are purposeful and serve a purpose to make Satrapi's point about the government and double standards. The artwork alone in the graphic novel is enough to fuel the story alone. The picture give her a certain credibility that is different and unique compared to other books. Her art conveys her story and adds and aspect of allowing us to see and experience those emotions along with her. Not in the normal conventions where we have to form our own picture about what everything in the story looks like, but pose or own question and opinions based on the images provided.

Time and Space
What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution? It allowed us to see the the controlling nature of the government. Persepolis highlights the key issues with the Iranian government and how people are struggling for freedom there. She allows us to see the extent to the government control and corruption. As well as the detriment that the new government has had on Iran.

What were some global issues you explored in Persepolis? Consider the Harkness discussion and other ideas that came up during class discussion. I explored how Art shapes and Challenges peoples perspectives on Freedom. I wanted to do this because it was an interesting subject that tied well between this and Hughes. It allows me to look at how Satrapi used her panel work and stamtents on freedom to develop what she is trying to tell us about freedom in Iran.

How does Persepolis connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works. Persepolis connects very well to Langston Hughes in terms of the artistry of the pieces. While in Hughes is uses rhythmic pace and shaping of the text. While in Persepolis it is designed to portray actual images to set the scene in our heads on the struggles in Iran. Both works are done beautifully and connect to the global issue that art shapes and challenges peoples perspectives on freedom. Each text individually complements each other on this subject but combined they really pack a strong punch.

How does Persepolis connect to our world today? Persepolis connect to our world today because it has some of the same ideas about equality embedded in it that the U.S tries to fight for. It allows us to see a close up inside the mind of a person in a war ton country like Iran and see the similarities between our country and their country. Satrapi shows us that we're really not that different form one another. She wants us to show the same compassion to all humans no matter where they come from.
