What do we know about forces?

Gravity is a force

Float away without gravity

a push is a force

wind is a type of force

forces cause motion (movement)

you use force to move a bike

friction is a force that happens when two things rub together (rubbing your hands together)

What do we want to know?

What keeps eggs in a basket if you swing it around?

Is air/ wind a type of force? Yes!

Questions- What is motion?

Strong and imaginative language

informal writing- "friendly"

examples- If I were to bounce a ball, it wouldn't keep bouncing. It would stop because of the force of gravity.

WOW words- strong words

Bold words- catch your attention, definition might follow

strong topic sentence ("hook")- telling what you're reading about, catches your attention and makes you want to read on

What we learned about forces through experiments

scooters- easy to move on the tile, but not as easy to move on the carpet

marbles- not too much or too little force

use more to move an object with more mass/ that is heavier

use force to flick the marbles, that marble forces the other to move

marbles resisted each other (inertia)

friction- when 2 things rub together, friction is created

when two marbles hit each other, sometimes they stopped moving...

So far we have learned about forces and marbles and played a marble game. We want to share our FABULOUS experience with you. Have you ever played marbles? We used forces to make the marbles move when flicking them. Don't use that much force when flicking them. The reason you don't want to put too much force on the marble is because it will go into the air or it will go out of the circle and you will lose a turn. Uh oh! When the marbles made contact with each other, there were two things they would do. They would either stop, or they would change direction. We hope that sometime you can play the marble game and think about what we have taught you. Have a great game!

Imagine trying to push a super heavy boulder up a hill. I am something that makes it hard to move an object that is very heavy. When an object is moving, I make it very hard to stop it. When something is still, I make it very hard to begin motion. I am related to mass. I am related to speed. I am a fabulous fancy term. I am from Newton's First Law of motion. What am I?
