         <description><![CDATA[<div>- there is a strong correlation between vocabulary knowledge and academic performance (the more words a student knows, the higher the level of reading comprehension, leading to a higher level of academic achievement)<br><br>- ELLs could be 1000 word families (at least) behind their age peers meaning elementary students needs to learn 10 words per day and secondary students need to learn 15 words per day<br><br>- receptive knowledge is greater than productive knowledge<br><br>- small group conversations about words can help vocabulary development (provide a few key words that may come up soon for students)<br><br>- providing a visual word chart (with words in English and Native language) can help student learn new vocabulary without losing identity<br>- word learning strategies such as modeling how to look for clues to meanings in context or analysis (of prefixes and suffixes) help educators of ELLs<br><br>- ELL starting points and Learning Goals are different</div>]]></description>
