We would study the various rules and forms of poetry and then I would help my students create a portfolio of their own poetry. They would work in groups or pairs to create a variety of different types of poetry. The finished products would be compiled into a final portfolio where students would display their understanding of poetry rules.

I would hang posters around the room with each characters' name on them. Students would be put into small groups and move around the classroom putting sticky notes on each poster that relate to the characters. They would put descriptions, quotes, and traits on each poster. At the end of the class, we would look at the posters and discuss the characters to gain a well-rounded view of each one.

Students would have to describe a setting or event without any dialogue. They would only be allowed to include sensory information concerning their subject. Students would have to take a closer look at their subject in order to learn how to describe it with sensory language.

My students would form a small book club of peers, relatives, or friends and read a book together. This may be more difficult to grade, but another great option is creating a shelf on Goodreads.com that the students would post book reviews and recommendations on. They would share it with friends and family to foster a connection to reading.

If my class was reading To Kill a Mockingbird I would include supplemental materials on racism and segregation laws. I would have my students propose a problem from the novel and think of ideas they could do to solve it. I would have them write a letter to the mayor of Maycomb county with ideas on how to fix a racial issue from the novel. It would engage them in thinking outside the box and using various materials and forms of writing to solve the problem.
