• It snows in Maycomb County (which it rarely does) for the first time since 1885.
• Scout and Jem made a snowman which ended up looking very similar to their unfriendly neighbor Mr. Avery.
• Miss Maudie’s house catches on fire and the whole neighborhood came help and see the commotion.
• The burning of Miss Maudie’s house doesn’t bother her that much because she says she’s always wanted a smaller house so she could have a bigger yard for her plants.
• While Scout and Jem watch the fire from in front of the Radley house Boo put a blanket around Scout and she didn’t notice until she came back inside her house.

> Miss Maudie Atkinson is a very benevolent lady who is a neighbor of the Finch’s. She lets Scout, Jem and Dill play in her yard as long as they stay out of her garden.
> Scout and Jem start to grow apart from Scout so Miss Maudie helps her by talking with her and they become closer.
> Scout soon reveals that Dill tells false stories or tall tales that aren’t accurate, such as when he was talking about his dad’s beard even though Scout remembered that Dill said he didn’t.
> Atticus prevents the kids from sending Boo a letter. They wanted to tell him to sometime come out of his house and things like that.
> Scout and Jem are taught by Atticus that they should have empathy for people instead of bothering people because you don’t want want them to bother you.

Motif: education is important in children’s lives.“The second grade was grim, but Jem assured me that the older I got the better school would be, that he started off the same way, and it was not until one reached the sixth grade that one learned anything of value.” (Lee 60) The education here is so inadequate they waste their first 6 years of education. It isn’t until 6th grade that Jem felt challenged and Scout is still waiting. Without being challenged the children aren’t learning anything new, not even life skills. It is a waste of time and tax payers money in such a terrible financial situation for the country. This obviously upsets the children because they complain about it.
