This is important for history because of the density of some of the material. Some students are able to dive deeper.

Ask a Colleague: Looking to more senior colleagues for guidance is invaluable for learning and is something I am constantly looking to do in my own practice.

- I really like having students discuss in pairs prior to class discussions. I think it lets students share ideas prior to the large group discussion. It also allows those students who may be shy to speak with a partner first.

- I think having students revise their work promotes correcting their mistakes and hopefully prevents students from making the same mistakes again. I would use this for writing assignments and have students examine their rubric or teacher feedback and then editing/revising to make their writing stronger.

1. Use a different context- OUr job as teachers is to think of ways to connect to our students. Trying to find a context that students can relate to can help them better understand the skill or concept.
2. Peer review (I'm doing this next week!) is a strategy that I like to use because evaluating other work helps them to think about the quality of their own work.

Taking it a step further can be having them compare/contrast the differences
3. Ask a colleague- LIFE SAVOR

Yesterday, I switched from teaching ELA ICS to SS ICS and OCR and have reached out to several teachers already for guidance - they often have the best ideas!

I also try to think of different ways to teach the same concept, or have the students understand the concept, especially in social studies. I try to relate ancient topics to modern day as much as possible, incorporate pictures from my personal travels or the internet as well as finding other ways to get the students interested in a topic we're learning about.

1. Student Discussion: This is effective especially when you make it creative, like a yarn discussion. Hold the end of the string and throw the yarn ball to the student who will speak next. Every time a student speaks, the yarn gets thrown. By the end of the discussion, students get a visual of the connections they made with one another.
2. Ask a Colleague: As a new teacher, it can be stressful to ask a colleague for feedback/advice but I found it to be the most helpful. Nobody knows everything!
