According to Andre Munro (2020), a superpower state is one whose influence in global politics is far greater than other states and has military and/or economic power. In the past decade or so, China has always been known to be an emerging superpower due to the rapid growth of its economy, being the number one in export and trade. Also, its military force is one of the most powerful in Asia with a power index of 0.2594 (Santosh, 2016). The Republic of China Armed Forces is also known for its advanced system and weaponry. Many believe that China may soon replace the United States as the world’s number one superpower.

In comparison to China, the Philippines’ overall status is far less prominent and influencial, especially when it comes to military and economic power. Opposite to China’s military strength, the Philippine armed forces is said to be one of the weakest in Asia (Viray, 2018). In the Asia Power Index, the Philippine military only scored 4.1 while China scored 69.9. Comparing the two countries’ economies, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) comprises 11.21% of the world’s economy, while the Philippines’ GDP just comprises 0.31% of it (Trading Economics, 2019). Once again, the Philippines is left far behind. However, on the other hand, the Philippines is rich in natural resources and is just a rank away from China. According to Index Mundi (2019), in the Asian countries ranking in natural resource rents in 2017, the Philippines ranked 32nd, while China ranked 31st.

In terms of foreign relations, there are numerous international organizations in which both China and the Philippines are a part of, but China makes more contributions and has much more power in those organizations. One example is the United Nations (UN). Both countries are members of the UN, however, China is far more powerful because it is one of the 5 permanent states that are part of the UN security council that have veto power (Center for the Strategic and International Studies, 2020). It is also said that China is the UN's second largest contributor in terms of monetary aid, which allows the state to exert political influence all around the globe.

Nevertheless, I believe that the Philippines has what it takes to become a superpower. Maybe not at the present time, but in the future. After all, the country was said to be Asia’s Rising Tiger due to its rapid economic growth. According to Cruz & Roberto (2020), the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation has already foretold that by the year 2050, the Philippines would rank 16th amongst the largest economies of the world. Even if its economy is not yet as great as China’s, it consistently grows every year. I believe that the Philippines has a lot of potential to become a superpower because of its wealth in natural resources as well. The country has a lot to offer in exporting goods such as fruits, nuts, machinery, and electronics (Pariona, 2019). Specializing in agriculture, farming and fishing are two main livelihoods of Filipinos in rural areas. I believe tourism is also a strength of the Philippines because it has many beautiful beaches, mountains, and other vacation spots that are loved by tourists all over the world.
