  • When I read the first two paragraphs, I can tell that there is a sound that the character is hearing, but I'm not sure what it is or where it is coming from.
  • I reread the text to make sure I understand. She hears it when she crosses in front of the car, but then realizes that it is coming from inside the garage.
  • I can also reread to remember details better. The noise is described as “directionless.” It is coming from nowhere and everywhere. This makes it sound mysterious and even scary.
  • I can infer that the author is trying to use the sound to build up to something terrifying happening. I can keep reading to see if I am correct.
