“Gymnastics seeks to provide a context for aesthetic experience and the opportunity to develop personally, socially and physically through participation in gymnastics in a safe and enjoyable environment” (www.jcpe.com). "

Gymnastics offers students an opportunity for growth and exploration, focusing on both mind and body. Gymnastics is a specialised sport which allows students to enhance their balance and coordination and requires core stability. Themes and skills learned in gymnastics will fall through to other sports and physical fitness, greatly improving muscular strength, flexibility and muscular endurance. Gymnastics is fit for the individual. This will allow students to become aware of their varying ability levels which will encourage both self and peer assessments i.e. group work. Student confidence levels will improve as they will perform various tasks and routines in front of their peers, both individually and as a part of a group.

Gymnastics is a sport which incorporates many core skills such as; balance, traveling, jumping and transfer of weight. It is extremely beneficial for muscle strength and flexibility which are key in remaining fit and healthy and avoiding injuries. Gymnastics skills are applicable in all sports (which will be discussed in all lessons). Gymnastics also includes rhythm, which is beneficial for many sports and it is also a good area to include in order to vary the learning style for those musical-rhythmic students. Gymnastics is an enjoyable sport that will push students out of their comfort zone and improve their confidence. It will also assist students’ bonding with one another, as they all experience a new sport totally out of their comfort zone.

(Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life). The aim will be to seamlessly incorporate Literacy and Numeracy into each lesson without the pupils being aware they are focusing on these skills. This way pupils will be able to develop these skills and become an ‘informed citizen’ without realising that they are developing these lifelong skills.

Rationale for Selection of the Model

I have chosen this Strand to introduce Cooperative Learning because i think Gymnastics naturally lends itself to students having to work together in groups. It's important that to point out here that Cooperative Learning is not just group work "Even with the best of intentions, teachers may be using traditional classroom learning groups rather than cooperative learning groups. To ensure that a group is cooperative, educators must understand the different ways cooperative learning may be used and the basic elements that need to be used and the basic elements that need to be carefully structured within every cooperative activity" (Johnson and Johnson 1995)
I also think Cooperative Learning is the best model to introduce to the students first. The students will learn many skills in this model that will 'transfer' to other models. Skills such as Interpersonal and Small Group Skills are very important to develop and are referenced in curricula all over the world "Interpersonal and Small Group Skills, is especially related to the development of social skills and is listed as a goal of curricula and national standards across the globe
I also think that Cooperative Learning is a good model to introduce at this time because it takes the focus off successful performance. Many students can think they are 'failures' in PE because they can't perform some of the basic skills. In my class, we started with Gaelic Football. Some of the students play at a high level, while some students struggled with the basic skills which led to some of the students becoming frustrated. In cooperative learning some of the focus is taken off successful performance "Cooperative Learning, when it’s done well and when it uses all of its attributes, goes a long way to ensure that success is about more than just performance. Success is defined in terms of team or group achievement and not individual prowess, and it (i.e. success) can only be achieved when everyone works together for a shared purpose" (Dyson and Casey 2016)
