I do fair amount of 1:1 work with kids, and I'm noticing that a lot of these kids (Tati, Jose, Justin C) are doing better in lit than they have all year. They're more "in" in this class. Just went on a calling and texting spree to make sure that families and students were looped in and it seems like there is some burn out from the students. But after that communication, 9 students came to Office Hours and 23 students turned in some amount of make-up work. 

BUT there is also more A's and A+'s than ever! So that is awesome too. Also students who don't normally participate are getting more involved than ever (almost every cold called student comes off of mute to share)! Some of the essays are some of the best I've ever seen. The majority of kids are keeping up with the work. Based on a survey, kids like the class and also like the parts I thought they would like the least (i.e. when Schwartz is talking and they take notes (I think it may be because it's not hard to do and it gives them a chance to write in a notebook instead of on the screen)). The bummer is that the goal I've set is the keep the kids engaged every day, coming back for more, and in some big ways that's just not having. I have a big bunch of kids who simply aren't taking the course. Work completion is like 70%. I've done a lot to make the assignments easier, but it's still a lot of independent work, and kids get really overwhelmed by that, and just check out. And if you don't do the homework, you don't understand class, which makes class boring. Setting aside my class for a second, it's been interesting to realize how agreeable remote learning is for some kids; a lot of my advisees have lately been talking about the upsides; being around their siblings and pets during class, having the time to pursue more of their own interests, it is a hardship for some, but not for all.

I would say about one third of them participate actively every class period. There is about 20 that are not engaged/not getting it at all. I don't necessarily think they are ENJOYING chemistry. It's a bit dry.
