Mexico tends to balance itself in a way that it can easily fall to the “what a mess of a country” side or to the “wow, this country is getting its 🤬 together” side. Comfort dictates that the above allows Mexico to be in an eternal state of limbo. Corruption consumes around 10% of the GDP a year. Depending how you count, but if we go with the trillion dollar economy, then the country looses X billion dollars a year. And talking corruption, everyone is in it, not only politicians who are the regular scapegoats, citizens, NGOs, companies, 🤬 I am convinced that even dogs and puppies are in it as well. Oh, and its not that Mexico likes corruption, it is systemic and if you snooze you loose. Mexico’s corruption issue is so ridiculous that the new to be Anti Corruption Organisation is riddled with corruption. Low productivity is another issue. Mexico works the longest of any OECD countries 40+hrs p/w but are the least productive. And why would you want to be productive? In the last two decades median wages have all but stagnated while the economy has grown at an average 3% per year. Egypt, Turkey and even Iran have grown at faster rates...... Smart fellows migrate. Not all of them, but if you’re a smart electrical engineer and you’re offered a job at Boeing in Seattle with a beefy salary when all your local options are just meh, then it’s clear what you would do. Violence. Lot’s of violence. 2017 the deadliest year since 2011. Why do we have to experience the levels of violence experienced in war torn countries. Indifference to violence. Because it happens so much, many are used to it and accept it on a daily basis. Income distribution. Mexico ranks high in its levels of inequality. Just come and see it for yourselves. This, imho, explains a lot of the above, if not, most points. Badly executed projects. Many are well done, but dang are people greedy in this country. The more you observe, the more you see where and when someone made a big profit by cutting corners. Cutting corners building that road where thousands transit everyday, reducing costs for the construction of a new metro line, buildings, water systems, affordable housing, and the list goes on and on and on. It’s so absurd that the people that end up being affected often say that they saw it coming.
