Hello class my name is kaheem Jones and I am in the mental health and wellness program. As far as career plans, I hope to continue working in mental health after I graduate. I just recently left my job at Texas Health and Human Services commission in order to focus more on my studies. One of my goals is to work with the autism center after I graduate. When I’m not focused on school or work my hobbies include video games, investing in stocks, and listening to podcasts. I graduated with an undergrad degree in sociology and minored in early childhood education. One goal I have from this course is to be able to hopefully Network and narrow my career path towards a specific field and I hope to learn new innovations in the mental health field.

Assessing Prior Knowledge

The most profound information I learned from reviewing the resources on mental health concerns was that Suicide for youth ages: 10 - 24 is third leading cause of death in the U.S. Another shocking detail I learned was that 37% of our youth 14 and older are dropouts.

I worked as a Direct Support Professional and Behavioral Specialist at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission for five years. I worked as part of a team to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities achieve their goals. On a routine day I documented information on the person’s life, such as things that occur throughout their daily schedule, how they respond to activities on the home, training, and unusual incidents. This course on learning about crisis, trauma, and mental illness is important because working in my field involves constant learning as innovations and new studies come out. There is always a new treatment and knowledge that can become an advantageous tool to help us help others. My experience working in mental health has taught me that treatment is done on an individual basis so there is no generic way to care for mental illness for the masses and there is always innovation to crisis intervention.

An article I found interesting was the new studies and research implementing psychedelics (specifically psilocybin) to treat some mental illnesses including depression and PTSD. This is relevant to my field because I aspire to become a Behavioral Health Specialist focused on doing research using psychedelics to treat certain mental and intellectual disabilities. Seeing the positive results is what got me interested in furthering my career and contributing my effort to combat the mental health crisis.

https://bigthink.com/surprising-science/paul-stamets-microdosing?rebelltitem=1#rebelltitem1
