Some hundred thousand African Americans are moving north in search of jobs, however, many northern cities were not ready for "the great move north." in 1919 alone, there were approximately 25 race riots in northern cities. Zora Neal Hudson wrote about the Migration. "Some said goodbye cheerfully . . . others fearfully, with terrors of unknown dangers in their mouths . . . others in eagerness for distance said nothing. They daybreak found them gone. The wind said North." - quoted in Sorrow's Kitchen; The Life and Folklore of Zora Neal Hudson.

In the late 1910s, Jazz was created in New Orleans, Florida. Jazz was where musicians blended instrumental ragtime and blues from singers into a new popular sound. In 1918 the Creole jazz band moved north, taking jazz with them. White americans loved the new sound of music and came from all over to listen to it.

Economic boom

In 1908, henry ford made his first automobile. It soon became a huge part in american life. In 1926 there was a highway that connected Chicago to the west coast. The railroad industry was not as popular with the automobile. The airplane is now being used to ship goods, and get people places. Since it was faster, and cheaper than the railroad, the railroad industry was less and less popular. Credit also made a big impact on the american economy with the idea of "buy now pay later." This made a big impact, especially on the stock market. You can buy on margin, where you only pay 10% of the total cost now, and once you sell the stock then you pay the remaining 90%. Farmers were doing poorly however, because wages were low, and soil was bad.

Harding's presidency affected tax regulations, in fact his presidency has the highest tariffs in US history. However, the tax protected us businesses especially in the chemical and metal industries. However, when Germany failed to make its payment because its economy was terrible, French troops marched on Germany. To dodge a bullet (literally and figuratively.) The US government sent Charles G. Dawes to negotiate loans. However, one of the biggest example of corruption during this time period was the teapot dome scandal. The US government bought some oil fields for nava fuel, and put a cabinet member on the task of managing them. However, the cabinet member by the name of Albert B. Fall. However, Fall rented the oil fields to private oil companies in return for some cash.
